Morris-Turnberry council got off
to a quick start in 2002 holding its
first meeting of the new year on Jan.
2.
Deputy-Mayor Bill Thompson
offered a--brief clarification of an
item concerning Turnberry Public
School. He wished it to be clear that
the ratepayers of Turnberry had paid
for the initial costs for the Turnberry
School.
***
Council voted to endorse a resolu-
tion from the Twp. of Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh to petition the
provincial government to change
legislation to allow property owners
to make application to OMAFRA to
amend their Farmland Property
Class for the current taxation year.
***
Council approved the renewal its
membership in the Association of
Municipalities of Ontario at a cost of
$950.73. _
***
Council decided that any garbage
delivered to the Morris landfill site
in 2002 must be tagged with a
Morris-Turnberry tag.
The Huron East council meeting of
Jan. 9 saw one of the oldest existing
agricultural drainage projects in the
municipality officially on its way to
refurbishment and upgrading.
The Holland municipal drain which
serves the area to the east of Walton
in Grey and McKillop Twps. was first
begun in 1913. The drainage works
have begun to show their age recent-
ly with residents often suffering
extensive flooding in the spring.
Last Wednesday council received
the engineer's report on the proposed
work and have issued a call for ten-
ders for Feb. 4. Before the work is
approved a court of revision must sit
to hear any assessment appeals by
effected landowners.
The main drain and its three tile
branches will be over 2,700m in
length and the work is estimated to
cost over $170,000.
***
There were a number of concerns
expressed to council about the pro-
posed name changes for area streets.
A public meeting will be held at the
BMG Community Centre on Jan. 31.
***
School closure was again the sub-
ject of council deliberations although
this time it was behind closed doors.
Council met, 'in camera,' for over an
hour with its legal advisor on the clo-
sure issue Fred Leitch. At the end of
the session all that was said was that
the council agreed to ratify the deci-
sion of the committee of the whole.
