PAGE 18. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2002.
Over the Christmas week, several
members of our family found an
opportunity to see the just-released
movie Ali. A note of trivia about the
film I found interesting is that the
executive producer, Michael Mann
was producer of the television series,
Miami Vice. And of course, Cassius
Clay, was portrayed by Will Smith,
The official board on behalf of the
congregation of Londesboro United
Church recently purchased a new
Rodgers organ. Purchase of this
instrument was possible through
donations to the memorial fund and
other monetary gifts given to and by

plaque affixed to. the organ. The
organ was installed in the sanctuary
on Jan. 9 and 10.
Dedication of the new organ began

Actually Will's fresh prince char-
acter was similar to Ali's "I am the
greatest" personality. Although
bulked up by 30 pounds as a result of
months of dieting and body building,
Will Smith did- not quite reach the
size of the heavyweight champ.
Some of us went to the movie out
of curiosity — to learn more about the
man behind what we saw and heard
through the media in his glory days.
One of us however, got more fight
action than she wanted. Part of Ali's
boxing success was due, to changes
in his fighting strategies for each
bout. Watching for these differences
would take the edge off the three
matches depicted.

This second Sunday in January the
Londesboro congregation considered
the baptism of Jesus by John the
Baptist. The act, recorded in Matthew
3: 13-17 marked the beginning of
Christ's work on earth. From the Old
Testament scripture passage, Isaiah
42: 1-19 came the text for the ser-
mon, titled Grinders. A version of
Psalm 29 was the responsive reading.

Ali is aimed, I believe, at a sophis-
ticated or discerning viewer, mean-
ing that not everything is explained.
Moviegoers are expected to see
behind the scenes and hear between
the lines. For example, Ali suffers
from Parkinsqn's disease. Just one
line, easily missed, in the busy mess
of a fight hints that the disease might
already be affecting his health.
Not only does the film tell the
story of Ali, but is meant to be an
expose of the times, eg. the covert
actions of the FBI and the CIA; and
the struggle with segregation/dis-
crimination faced by blacks in
America. These societal factors
obviously affected events in Clay's
life but the viewer is expected to

Grinders are those person who in
any aspect of life never give up but
persevere, always having faith that
one day circumstances will change.
Jesus, as a servant of God, was a
grinder, always ministering and
spreading God's word. He never
rejected His mission although He
wondered if His disciples and the
masses were listening to his teach-
ings.
