PAGE 17. Fire does severe damage A fire in a house on the Blyth Road in Hullett Twp. did approximately $75,000 damage on the weekend. According to Blyth Fire Chief Paul Josling, a couple moving in removed a log from the woodstove and did not completely extinguish it before leaving for several hours. The smoldering log even- tually set the house ablaze. The building was insured but not the contents. (David Blaney photo) FROM AUBURN Club quilts The Walkerburn Club went quilt- ing at Vera Penfound's home on Wednesday, Jan. 9. Due to weather and illness the usual number were not present. However, the quilt was for a crib so the eight attending worked out nicely. The quilt Puppy Love has a great deal of quilting and could not be fin- ished in one day so members are returning when possible to finish it. The usual worship and business was not held, but cards were signed and sent to Mrs. T. Hunking who had had cataract surgery and to Hans Boonstoppel who had been seriously ill and was returning home that day. A birthday card was also signed and sent to Dorothy Grange, who is celebrating her 90th birthday. No definite plans were made for the February meeting but we may go visiting former members. At last I have returned — after Christmas, I had a nasty cold so did not feel like writing. I asked for a White Christmas and sure had it to my delight. It never seems so Christmasy if the land is not white. To my pleasure the cold weather and the snow brought the birds back. There had been juncos, chickadees and gold finch in their winter attire and the occasional nuthatch. Even the noisy bluejays were not there as usual. I did not have cardinals which I sorely missed. Things have certainly changed. One Mrs. Cardinal is busily eating in the feeder now. This morning there were three males and several ladies enjoying their breakfast on the ground. I was having my break- fast while they dined. The bluejays are also back but do not seem as boiSterous as usual. Perhaps I'm getting deaf! There is often the ladder-backed, The season of the Blyth Skating Club is at the halfway mark with the first 10-week session just completed and the second session set to begin. The power skaters were tested and many successfully passed their lev- els. The results were as follows: PrePower A - Derek deBoer, Ruben deVries, Kennan MacDonald, Bradley McPherson, Micah Nonkes, Alex Peters, Mark Siertsema, Spencer Stevenson, Sheree Uyl, Nathan Verburg, Braydon red-bellied woodpecker enjoying a meal at the feeder and numerous doves eat both from the ground and the feeders. Needless to say the food disappears and has to be refilled daily. The Auburn Lions Club served their sumptuous breakfast Sunday morning, Jan. 13 with an excellent attendance. The cooks, waiters and dishwashers were kept very busy and we give them hearty thanks. Mrs. Pat Hunking has had cataract surgery and is.. delighted with the result. The other eye will have sur- gery shortly. Dorothy Grange . celebrated her 90th birthday Jan. 14. Dorothy lived in this area On the farm and raised four daughters on her own. She saw that the girls had a good education and they became teachers or nurses. She was active in /church work and in the UCW. She is a resident now at Goderich Place. We wish that she celebrates many more Happy Birthdays. She certain- ly deserves the best. Hans Boonstoppel is well on the recovery list now and happily at home. He was critically ill for sever- al days but God was with him and excellent care by doctors and nurses have led to his recovery. The community is very pleased to have him home again.
