CCS encourages smokers to come in from the cold
The Canadian Cancer Society
wants to help smokers to come in
from the cold. As more municipali-
ties across Ontario adopt anti-smok-
ing bylaws, smokers are feeling the
impact. The Canadian Cancer
Society's Smokers' Helpline can
provide support to help make quit-
ting easier — and winter warmer!
"We understand how difficult it is
for smokers who are not only coping
with a powerful addiction but are
now finding themselves smoking
outside of public and work places,"
said Ted Wheatley, past president
and chair, public issues, Canadian
Cancer Society, Ontario Division.
"Most smokers have also got the
message and understand that
quitting would benefit their
health."
The Canadian Cancer Society
advocates strongly for legislation
that protects people from second-
hand smoke.
Studies have shown that exposure
to secondhand smoke increases a
person's risk of cancer and other ill-
nesses. Health Canada ranks smok-
ing and exposure to secondhand
smoke as the first and third leading
causes of preventable death in
Canada. Today, 45,000 smokers die
prematurely each year due to smok-
ing.
"By restricting tobacco use, help-
ing people quit, and promoting
health messages, we will save lives",
said Wheatley. "We know that more
that one million people will be think-
ing about quitting smoking in the
next six months — it's important they
know that help is a phone call away."
The Canadian Cancer Society's
Smolcers' Helpline (1-877-513-5333
— available in Ontario only) offers
information, advice and support.
Calls are answered by trained Quit
Specialists who provide personal-
ized support that makes quitting eas-
ier and with more chance of success.
Jan. 20 - 26 is National Non-
Smoking Week and Weedless
Wednesday is Jan. 23. The Canadian
Cancer Society, Ontario Division
supports the Ontario Tobacco-free
Network's theme: "Go For Gold —
Become 100 per cent Smoke-
free!"
Tobacco-free councils and organi-
zations across the province are chal-
lenging their local municipalities to
adopt bylaws that prevent smoking
in public places.
A map displaying existing 100 per
cent smoke-free municipalities can
be viewed at www.theom.org
The Canadian Cancer 'Society
leads the way in the fight against
cancer. The Canadian Cancer
Society funds research on all types
of cancer, offers comprehensive and
credible information on cancer,
treatment and risk reduction, and'
provides support for people living
with cancer.
