Despite critical praise, Blyth Festival records deficit
Despite critically-praised produc-
tions that drew standing ovation
after standing ovation, the Blyth
Festival recorded a deficit of
$149,000 for the past year.
Festival officials speaking at the
annual meeting of the membership
Dec. 17 at the Bainton Gallery
expressed frustration that despite the
fact reviewers and audiences alike
seemed to enjoy the plays presented,
revenues from ticket sales fell by
$80,000 when an increase of six per
cent had been set in the budget.
In addition, expenses were higher
in 2001 compared to 2000 because
of the high cost of developing and
building The Outdoor Donnellys, a
show that just broke even despite
being sold out for the entire run
before it opened.
Auditor Ron Burt of the account-
ing firm of Takalo and Burt assured
members that despite the deficit,
which created an accumulated
deficit of $125,000, "This is not
nearly like the financial situation in
the early 1990s but it will be a tough
situation (with cashflow) next year."
He warned, "This cannot continue.
Artistic Director Anne Chislett
said the disappointing results from
2001 had caused revisions for the
2002 season with one production
dropped as $200,000 was slashed
from the budget.
The season will begin with a
remounting of The Outdoor
Donnellys for which $55,000 in tick-
ets have already been sold, she said.
Because many of the development
costs have already been met the
show should be profitable this year,
Chislett said.
Chislett said attendance was never
bad, with the theatre looking well-
filled each night, but there just
weren't the sold-out performances
that could usually be counted on to
boost attendance. The core audience
attended as usual but it seemed to be
the casual ticket buyer and the com-
mercial tour groups that were miss-
ing. There were 43 fewer commer-
cial tour groups over the summer,
though there was an equivalent
increase in smaller groups, usually
from closer to home.
While ticket spies lagged, the
Festival's fundraising efforts were
successful with the 3x3 Art Auction
netting $5,000 and the annual book-
sale nearly $4,000. Donations
actually exceeded the amount bud-
getted.

A walk through as snowy wonder-
land while sipping warm apple cider
Christmastime means many things
to many people, but one thing
remains constant — the holidays are a
time of "goodwill toward men."
After a year of hustle and bustle
and dealing with the stress of day-to-
day living, Christmas is when people
can relax and enjoy the happiness
that infuses the season. Warmth and
generosity seem to fill everyone's
heart as they spread joy to their fam-
ily, friends and even strangers on the
street.
Whether remembering the delight-
ful Christmas spent with grandma
and grandpa or planning a special
holiday for their own children and
grandchildren, people are filled with
the spirit of the season. A feeling of
harmony is in the air, bringing peo-
ple from far and wide together. They
share their time, their thoughts -and
even special gifts with each other,
and they seem to forget about the
troubles they faced just a short while
ago.
Christmas is a time of reflection
and rejuvenation, allowing people to
recover from their hectic daily
lifestyles. This feeling of calmness, a
part of the fabric of the holidays,
helps people prepare for the new
year ahead of them. However, once
Christmastime has passed, many

people go back to the way they were
— stressed, frustrated and too busy to
take time out for the pleasures of life.
This year, they should let the spir-
it of Christmas live throughout the
year. Not only will they be happier,
but their kindness will brighten
another person's life, and hopefully,
he or she will spread this joy on to
others. This is just one small way to
make the world a better place.
So, to their Christmas list, people
can add a wish that the holiday spir-
it lasts the whole year through.
