Students see 'Christmas Carol' in Blyth
FROM LONDESBORO
10 tables
in play
at euchre
The blast of wintry weather that
crossed our area on Friday evening,
Dec. 14 kept many regular card play-
ers at home. Consequently, there were
only 10 tables of euchre players at the
Happy Gang Seniors' card party.
Murray Forbes and John Van Loo
were the high couple with 74 points.
Close behind with 73 points were
Lloyd and Lillian Appleby. Tied for
third place with 67 points were
Carmen and Ila Pollock and George
Bacon and Harold McClinchey.
Len and Betty Archambault had the
most lone hands that evening with
five. The next card party will be held
Jan. 11.
The seniors wish everyone a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Parents, staff and community were
relieved to hear recently that for the
time being, Hullett Central Public
School will remain open. It's to be
hoped that before the issue surfaces
again, the province takes another
look at its funding formula and the
difference between rural and urban
education.
This year rather than have a skat-
ing afternoon, all Hullett pupils
attended a -performance of A
Christmas Carol at the Blyth
Festival on Wednesday, Dec. 19. The
Dufflebag Theatre troupe presented
this Charles Dickens' classic.
Again this fall the Blyth Legion
sponsored a Literacy and Poster con-
test for Remembrance Day in this
district. Recently Crystal Taylor pre-
sented awards to Hullett pupils.
Congratulations to Liz Ferrier,
first in coloured poster; Amanda
Zenker, first in junior poem; Luke
Archibald, second in intermediate
black and white poster; Sara Moore,
second in intermediate coloured
poster; Lindsay Gibson was second
in intermediate poem and first in
intermediate essay; Jacob Crosby's
poem placed first in the intermediate
category and was sent on to the zone
When you receive this edition of
your local newspaper, it is Christmas
Eve and time is running out for all
competition where it placed third.
On Wednesday evening, Dec. 18
the pupils at Hullett Central Public
School presented their annual
Christmas concert titled Christmas
in Song — Part 2. The musical
evening was conducted by Ms.
Wyatt, this being her second year _
teaching the music program at
Hullett. Bonnie Jewitt accompanied
the choirs.
The evening began with a carol-
sing accompanied by the school
band. Members of the band are sen-
ior students, half of whom are new
this fall to instrumental music. Their
playing was a nice welcome for the
audience of parents and grandpar-
ents. The band also entertained with
Clarinet Caprice.
After only six weeks of training,
students from Grades 3,4 and 5 gave
a rendition of Jolly Old St. Nicholas
on recorders.
What would a school concert be
without the charm of kindergarten
pupils? With groups of rhythm band
instruments they were The. Merry
Christmas Band. Then Mrs. Kemp's
class, dressed in white with sequined
ears, sang about making and eating A
Polar Bear Christmas Cake. Dressed
those 'things' you have planned to
have done. Keep this little quote in
mind. "Let's approach Christmas
with an expectant hush, rather than a
last-minute rush."
Jan. 1, municipal amalgamation
became a reality. This time last year
office personnel for the Twp. of
Hullett and Twp. of Goderich were
preparing for a move to new quarters
at the Clinton Town Hall as part of
the new Municipality of Central
Huron.
Eleven months later, early in
December, a For Sale realty sign was
posted at the new building which for
a short time housed the office and
council chambers for Hullett Twp. As
I recall the township budget showed
a significant increase the year of that
building's construction in spite of
what was said at the time about
reserves.
Now, do you suppose the monies
from the sale of that property will
benefit solely the taxpayers of
Hullett Twp.? More likely the
receipts will go in a common fund to
be spread across the whole of Central
Huron.
More's the pity.
A precious bundle has arrived just
in time for Christmas at the home of
Matt and Aimee Townsend. Early
Sunday, Dec. 16, Lucas Murray,
Londesboro's newest .and youngest
resident. WelcOme Lucas and con-
gratulations to Dad and Mom!
Another tire changer?
in pyjamas and slippers and hugging
teddy bears, Mrs. Black's class
offered Me and My Teddy Bear.
The primary choir sang Mrs. Santa
Claus and a two-part round of Jingle
All the Way. Quite effective was
Holiday Lights complete , with
coloured flashlights at the front of a
darkened auditorium.
The Hap-Hap-Happiest Season
and Once Again It's Christmas were
the numbers performed by the junior
choir. A combined junior and pri-
mary choir sang Getting Ready for
Christmas.
These choirs ended the concert
with Where Can We Find Peace,
which conveyed a different message
of Christmas. The selection encour-
aged everyone to reach out in peace,
love, joy and hope to make the
whole world one. Lindsay Gibson
also accompanied this last number
on the flute.
