North Huron leases land for park project By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor North Huron council gave its sup- port to a proposal that would see the old pool in Wingham revitalized as a sprinkler park. Ruth Anne Hamel and Helen Brown attended the Monday night meeting to discuss plans for new playground equipment. Hamel said that following council's advice from an earlier meeting the pair had looked into getting a Trillium grant. One of the suggestions that came from this, Hamel said, was to bring on board the local service clubs. In the fall, she spoke to the four organ- izations in Wingham and have received whole-hearted support. Laughter, the Best Medicine® My new clerk followed directions quickly and without question. When I asked her to type up a travel advance for 1,500 Belgian francs, she soon gave me the form to sign. I noticed, however, that it read "1,500 Belgian franks." "You've spelled francs incorrectly," I told her. "Please change it to a 'c'." She took the form from me and returned with a revised one. It read, "1,500 Belgian cranks." — Bruce Milne co.. ader's Digest. www.readersdigest.ca The War Amps NEVER ACAIN! NEVER AGAIN! the horrors of war. While one aspect of the project is the removal of the playground equip- ment at Riverside Park, Hamel said they have also been considering whether replacement here is the best location. "Our focus went to the old pool park, which is not just ideal but it would be wonderful to have a sprinkler park in the old pool." This would be a free-flowing sys- tem that would require no staff supervision as there is not standing Huron OPP report conducting five separate RIDE checkpoints over the past weekend, Dec. 15 and 16. A total of 380 vehicles were stopped at various locations through- out the county. No persons were arrested for drinking, driving offences. One driver received a 12- hour suspension and three liquor charges were laid as well as one traf- fic offence. Sappy 50th Anniversary Hielke & Teresa water. It would run at scheduled hours. "We want to look at the whole community. I think that's what can make this unique," said Hamel. A committee of 10, with represen- tation from the service clubs, has been formed. A stipulation for the Trillium grant application said Hamel is that the land for the park be leased from the municipality at a minimal cost for a five to seven year period. "They won't even consider you for a grant unless you have that in place." Insurance and liability would be covered under the township's exist- ing insurance. Dan Cousins, director of recreation facilities agreed that there would be minimum impact on the premium because the committee was proposing taking an old system and putting it up to code. Hamel said the committee's goal was to have the equipment layout complete, the lease in place and the application filled out by March. Asked for comment, Cousins said he had been contacted by the group about the idea early in the process. He spoke on their research and the fact that he had been kept informed of the progress. On-going - maintenance for the playground would be monitored by recreation staff. In conclusion Cousins said he "strongly" supported the effort. Council passed a motion leasing the land for $1 per year.
