Obituaries HERMEN LORNE POPP Hermen "Lorne" Popp of Blyth passed away suddenly at Clinton Public Hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001. He was his 70th year. Mr. Popp was born in London, Ontario on Dec. 27, 1931 and was the son of the late Otto and Amber (McKenzie) Popp. Mr. Popp was a member of Blyth United Church and was a retired miller from Howson and Howson Mills. He was the beloved husband of Continued from page 24 ful. All who found him knelt in humility before him. Nativity scenes can range from the very small, to the full scale re-enact- ment of the birth of Christ. But what- ever the size, they serve to remind us that Jesus was fully human, as well as fully divine, and that this ruler over all the earth, was born in the most humble of surroundings, a small stable. From the beginning of Christmas celebrations, gift giving has been a part of the season. The Wise Men gave out their treasures, and the shepherds gave of themselves. Both express the Gift of God in giving Christ as the Saviour of the world. Unique in our history of generous givers is'the story of Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra in Lycia in the fourth century AD. The good bishop gave his money away secretly to those whom he found in need. He was deeply inter- ested in young people, giving his wealth especially to maidens whose lack of a dowry was affecting their matrimonial future, and to needy Evelyn (Young) Popp. Mr. Popp was the loving father of Doug and Kim Popp of Moorefield, Dianne Popp of London, Robert Popp and Janet Fuller of Blyth, Paul and Betty Popp of Londesboro, Debbie and Steve Roy of Exeter, Betty and Brian Holme of London and David and Karen Popp of Clinton. He was loved and will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Kathy and Bradley Popp, Robert John, Jennifer and Jasmeen Popp, Aaron and Matthew Popp, Giegory, Kristopher, Jason boys. The discovery of his generosity is said to have been made by the father of three dowry-less daughters. The eldest two each received from the chimney on successive nights a sub- stantial gift of gold with her name on it. The father resolved to watch and see who their generous benefactor could be. His vigil revealed the good Saint Nicholas as the donor of the gifts. His name survives today as the human embodiment of unselfish giv- ing. Another Christmas tradition is car- olling, the origin of which as a part of the Christmas celebration, is real- ly unknown. Several countries have claimed to be the birthplace of the custom. From the first, music of some kind was a part of the church festivals in honour of the birth of Jesus. We know that carolling existed in Germany in the 15th century because Martin Luther wrote that when Christmas was celebrated, he went with others from house to house and village to village singing popular Christmas carols. We could and Michelle Roy and Nicole, Michael and Jessica Holme. He was the dear brother and brother-in-law of Bertha and Alvin McGee of Goderich, Lillian and Dirk Logtenburg of Goderich, Murray and Laura Popp of Goderich, Marjorie and Donald Treble of RR4, Goderich and Donald Young of Goderich. Mr. Popp was also survived by several nieces and nephews. One son Larry Popp, predeceased him in 1970. safely assume that carolling was first done by the Choir of Angels who sang, "Glory to God in the Highest an,1 on earth peace and good will to all people." The greatest Gift of Christmas is the Gift of God in Christ Jesus. All that we do at this Holy Season points to that expression of Holy Love. As Christians we seek to pass on our heritage to our children and to those who, by faith in Christ, become part of the Family of God. It is through the work of the Holy The evening unit meeting of the Brussels WUCC was held in the church room in the form of a potluck supper. Welcome was given by President Gertie Kellington.
