THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2001. At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald 'Tis the season to be jolly! And that's what we are at the Brussels Legion Branch. The Friday night supper of roast beef was delicious as were the added treats for a few lucky diners. This week is potluck, so bring your favourite dish and join in. It is also the gift exchange as well. If you want to, you can bring a $10 gift and take part. On Saturday it was Bluewater Ladies darts keeping the upstairs busy and downstairs it was Christmas euchre. There were 15 tables at play and lots of happy win- ners. The prize money was won by the lucky ladies Mabel Wheeler and Laura Johnston with 81 points for first place. The second and third- place teams were tied with 79 points for all, so the happy pairs were Stewart and Bea Rowley and. Jim Coultes and his friend George. The lone hand angel smiled on Lloyd Appleby and Eileen Sellers. Door prizes went to quite a few lucky peo- ple. There are the looks of pride and con- fidence of the children as the offer their gifts — their talents and time — at the school concerts and church serv- ices. The adults smile and pass along their offerings — a thoughtful word and deed. The smile gets passed again this time with a plate of cookies and a card and the smile goes again this time with a phone call and a cheerful chat. The feeling of goodwill and players. See you in 2002. If you weren't out on Sunday for the Christmas brunch you missed a wonderful meal. Everything from bacon and ham to soup and muffins were available. Christmas squares satisfied the sweet tooth. Over 65 went away full. The December general meeting is this coming Thursday evening at 7 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend. Don't forget, this Saturday before Christmas there are always extra people around and extra prizes to be had. Drop in and see if any old friends are around. The Legion will close Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and will be closed Christmas and Boxing Day. New Year's Eve tickets are avail- able at the Branch and at Murray Lowe's barbershop, so drop in and pick yours up today. This season is so special — we don't wait to see if it's correct or acceptable we just pass the smile, the gift with all the love that goes with it. Hurrah for December! This is a very emotional time of year as we think of those who will not be with us to celebrate. A death, ill- ness, divorce, family concerns or new job responsibility change the dynam- ics. Acknowledge the fact that you feel sad or angry, shed the needed tears then dig up the good memories of years past and enjoy them again. Only after you've accepted the fact that things change, can you live in this season with an open heart ready to share.the precious time in love and harmony. Visitors are around the village as extended families gather to' share their history and family love with meals, gifts and especially time together. Open house is another way we gather as friends to remember the times past, recall the events that need The Majestic Women's Institute held its Christmas meeting at the Brussels Inn beginning with a deli- cious turkey dinner on Dec. 12. There were 19 people present includ- ing one visitor. After dinner, Lucy Hesse, presi- dent, conducted a short meeting Lodge meets Members of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge met on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Merry Piper Restaurant for a turkey dinner. Following the meal, a short meet- ing was held in the lodge rooms. A donation was made to Eye Research in Ontario. Sister Gertie Kellington, Brothers Bill Kellington and John Brown cel- ebrated birthdays. Social time consisted . of a reading a gift exchange and secret sis- ters being revealed. Several draws were held with the winners being Sister Lois McCall, Mae Ebej and Dolores Wheeler. The deadline for the Dec. 24 paper is Thurs., Dec. 20 2 p.m. - Brussels 4 p.m. - Blyth The Citizen (This is the last paper until Jan. 9) repeating, review kindnesses received and share news with folks we call friends. Carol singing is part of this season and if you have favourites that you wish to sing with a group — come to the United Church tonight, Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. and sing until your lungs hurt. The judges' rounds have been com- pleted and the best decorated house and business have been selected for this Christmas season. It was a difficult decision for resi- dential with many worthy displays noted. However, the judges were impressed with the effort of Frank and Mary Stretton at 23 Halliday St. "The decorations extend to the prop- erty edge and around the back_giving this home a welcoming look. It looks so festive you can almost taste the eggnog you're sure they must be serv- ing inside." The Wings of Hope youth group was the hands-down winner of the commercial prize for the work at the Homecoming Gazebo. It was a nice all-round effort to create a bright spot beginning with the Ode. and Mary Stewart Collect, followed by the sec- retary's, treasurer's and sunshine reports. Arrangements were made to pack the Christmas boxes on Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Maple Villa. Arrangements were also made for making another quilt in the new year. A special visitor, Santa, gave out the gifts. Afterwards there were readings by Ruth Bauer, Leona Armstrong, Lucy Hesse and Edna McLellan. Ruth Bauer also had a spelling bee. Brussels United Church is accepting applications for Church Organist / Choir Director for February 2002. This position includes Sunday Worship Services and weekly choir rehearsals.
