A candlelight vigil will be held on
Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Courthouse
Park, Goderich across from the
Royal Bank, in memory of the 14
victims of the Montreal Massacre
and to remember the thousands of
Canadian women who have been,
and continue to be, physical and
emotionally abused, sexually
assaulted and murdered in their
homes, schoolyards, campuses and
workplaces every day of the
year.
"All are invited to gather for a
brief program to honour the lives of
those women who have died and to
renew our commitment to creating
greater safety for all women," said
Meredith McAsh, special events co-
ordinator for the Women's Shelter,
Second Stage Housing and
Counselling Services of Huron,
which is sponsoring the vigil. This
is similar to many other vigils being
held nationwide.
Twelve years ago, on Dec. 6;
Marc Lepine walked into an
engineering class at the Ecole
Polytechnique, Montreal, and
separated the women from the men
then killed all 14 women in the class
before turning the gun on himself.
Proud of them
Members of Blyth Scouts and their leaders from 2000-2001 received an honour last week with
Certificates for Meritorious Conduct for their prompt action and proper use of skills following
an accident in November last year, when a youth sustained a serious head injury. The award
came from the National Commissioner of Scouts Canada, on behalf of Governor-General and
Chief Scout of Canada Adrienne Clarkson. Back row, from left: Lavern Clark, Matthew
Goodall, Daniel Depatie, Kevin Freiburger, Terry Radford, Nancy Hakkers, Gerald Hakkers.
Front: Jakob Rouw, Shawn Drost, Adam Young, Frank Van Hittersum, Eric Radford, Derek
Dolmage. (Bonnie Gropp photo)
