Brussels Livestock report
Calves, yearlings trade steady at Friday sale
Total receipts for the Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Nov.
30 were 3,160 head of cattle, 446
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday the fed steers and
heifers sold at prices $2 to $3 higher.
The cows traded steady. On
Thursday both the veal and the
lambs sold on a steady market. On
Friday the calves and yearlings trad-
ed on a steady market.
There were 740 steers on offer
selling from $102 to $108 with sales
to $119. Perry Sereda, Centralia,
consigned two blue steers averaging
1,210 lbs. which sold to Norwich
Packers for $119. His overall con-
signment of fifty-one steers averaged
1,317 lbs. for an average price of
$110.88. One grey steer consigned
by Murray Shiell, Wingham,
weighed 1,380 lbs. which was pur-
chased by St. Helen's Meat Packers
Ltd. for $116.50. His overall con-
signment of sixteen steers averaged
1,447 lbs. for an average of $107.19.
Dave Bender, Palmerston, con-
signed five limousin steers averaging
1,347 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats
for $111.75. Fifteen steers consigned
by Clarence W. Martin, Mount
Forest, averaged 1,178 lbs. for an
average price of $110.96 with sales
up to $113.25. Sixteen steers con-
signed by Murray Wagg, Mitchell,
averaged 1,199 lbs. for an average of
$110.90 with his top eight black
steers averaging 1,123 lbs. selling

Eldon Bowman of Gorrie was
acclaimed as a director when Gay
Lea Foods held its Zone 1 annual
meeting at the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre,
Monday.
Bowman was returned for a sec-
ond term in the position at the meet-
ing, attended by abour400 people.
Elected delegates to the upcoming
convention from District 2 were Lyle
Martin of Ethel, Barry Ballantyne
and Dirk Willemsen.

Faced with an overwhelming
demand for money from the provin-
cially-funded Healthy Futures pro-
gram, Huron County will ask the
province to extend the program.
"We're going to be through our
total allotment in another three or
four months," said Ben Van
Diepenbeek, chair of the agriculture,
public works and seniors committee.
The program had been scheduled to
end on March 31, 2003 and had been
late.. starting, but applications for
projects to protect clean water have
flooded in. At the October meeting
of the Technical Advisory
Committee a further 80 applications
were approved. The applications
come not just from farms but from
other rural property owners includ-
ing those along the lakeshore and in
steers averaging 1,440 lbs. for
$112.25.
Twenty-three steers consigned by
Johnston Farms, Bluevale, averaged
1,377 lbs. for an average of $107.81
with his top limousin steer weighing
1,250 lbs. selling to Norval Meat
Packers for $113. Cunningham
Farms, Lucan,.consigned one limou-
sin steer weighing 1,345 lbs. which
sold to St. Helen's Meat Packers Ltd.
for $115.50. Their overall consign-
ment of thirty-nine steers averaged
1,514 lbs. for an average price of
$107.77.

$114. Their overall offering of forty-

heifer consigned by Hugh Love,
Atwood, weighed 1,180 lbs. selling
to Highland Packers Ltd. for $116.
His overall offering of thirty-six
heifers averaged 1,243 lbs. for an
average price of $111.06.
Gay Lea Foods turned a profit of
$3.466 million in the last year, down
from $3.662 million in 2000. The
company declared a shareholder div-
idend of $884,000 and a patronage
dividend of $500,000. The company
has issued a shareholder dividend
every year since incorporation in
1958.
Membership in the co-operative
reached a new high in 2001 with
4,470 members,' up 79 over last year.

Muxlea Farms, Woodstock, weighed
1,155 lbs. which sold to Highland
Packers Ltd. for $116. Their overall
consignment of fourteen heifers
averaged 1,242 lbs. for an average of
$107.37.
Franklin Roney, Staffa, consigned
twelve heifers averaging 1,362 lbs.
which sold for an average of $106.63
with his top limousin heifer weigh-
ing 1,190 lbs. selling to Dominion
Meats for $110. Eleven heifers con-
signed by Edward Martin, Holyrood,
averaged 1,363 lbs. selling for an
average of $102.68 with his top lim-
ousin heifer weighing 1,355 lbs. sell-
ing for $112.25.
There were 335 cows on offer. D I
and D2 cows sold $58 to $65 with
sales to $84.50; D3, $52 to $58; D4,
dairy farmers are members.
Gay Lea Foods increased produc-
tion of most of its products in 2001
including butter, cottage cheese, sour
cream. The company now has the
number one selling brand in all three
categories.
Currently it is building the most
modern powdered milk drying plant
in North America or Europe at
Guelph, at a cost of $40 million. The
plant is scheduled for completion in
2003.
