THE EDITOR,
An Apology to the Brussels
Community
I was very concerned and ashamed
to learn that one of my children was
involved in a situation which was
terribly wrong. I and my child would
like to apologize to the victims for
this wrongful behaviour.
Last Friday evening a group of
kids decided that they wold go car-
olling to Brussels residents and col-
lect money for Cubs. However, none
of these children were members of
Cubs.
As a parent I hope you can under-
THE EDITOR,
The world should be shocked and
dismayed at the news, Nov. 25, that
for the first time ever, a human
embryo has been cloned. Oh, not for
reproductive purposes, the report
stressed, but for the harvesting of
embryonic stem cells. Human life
has been reduced to a commodity —
something to be grown and harvested
like a crop of corn.
Science has proven, beyond the
shadow of a doubt, that a new human
life begins at conception, that is,
when the sperm penetrates the egg.
However, we have been hearing
for some years now, that life doesn't
really begin until implantation in the
mother's womb. I have always won-
dered how nonsense like this, can
come to be accepted as the truth by
so many people, indeed by high-
ranking officials such as doctors,
pharmacists, lawyers, government
officials, as well as the media.
Early in November, I attended a
conference, -where one of the speak-
ers spoke on bioethics, and lo and
behold, I found the answer.
Contrary to popular belief, and
therein lies the power, bioethics does
not establish the ethical boundaries
for biological research. Rather, the
bioethics movement sees itself as
creating a new worldview.
In fact, there is no code of ethics
for bioethicists; nor are there any
specific qualifications — no tests to
pass, no standards of knowledge or
achievement that apply universally;
they are not licensed. The move-
ment's leaders generally reject what,

closing any schools. The second
calls on the province to do some-
thing about the inadequacy of the
funding formula for Huron County's
schools.
Both motions carried despite the
doubts of South Huron Councillor
Rob Morley who wondered if the
county had any right to be interfer-
ing in school business. But Paul
Klopp, Bluewater councillor, argued
the county must be involved.
"It's not about our schools — our
schools are part of our communities.
We're (trustees and councillors) all
together on this."
stand the emotions I felt when con-
fronting my child of this wrong
doing and how it was going to be
handled.
I couldn't understand why this
child of mine thought that this was
okay. I taught the same morals of
trust and honesty to my other chil-
dren, who thought 'their sibling's
actions wi re unforgivable. I was
upset by the fact that these kids could
take advantage of people's generosi-
ty.
And my children know that no
matter what happens I will find out.
The following morning we took
until now, has been the core value of
Western civilization; that all human
beings possess equal moral worth.
Cutting-edge bioethics now holds
that there is nothing special per se, in
being human.
In fact, there is no international
body to limit scientists in what they
may or may not do, ethically or
morally, in their research. We rely on
individual countries to establish and
police their own laws/guidelines for
new reproductive technologies, and
some countries have not even both-
ered to do this.
Bioethics was created out of thin
air in 1978, by the Belmont Report,
which was commissioned by the
U.S. government in 1974. In the
introduction to the report, the three
authors stated that, for the purposes
of this report, the fetus refers to the
human, from the. time of implanta-
tion. They go on to say that this def-
inition may differ from medical,
legal, and common usage, and has
been adopted in the interest of clari-
ty.
Hello? This is definitely not a def-
inition in the interest of clarity, but
rather a blatant re-definition, for the
specific purpose of excluding pre-
implantation human embryos from
regulation. This false definition has
been widely used 'as gospel truth',
ever since.
So, the scientific fact of the matter
is that, when the human embryo is
cloned, there is in fact, a new human
being created. And when the stem
cells are removed at this stage, the
embryo dies. If we are a civilized
my child's split of the money to the
Cub leader, explaining the evening
events. The police-have been in con-
tact with us and my child will have to
deal with the repercussions of these
actions.
As a family we are very fortunate
to live in a community like Brussels
and I wanted you to know our sin-
cere apologies. We are responsible
for our actions and to be good citi-
zens.
I can only speak for my family in
saying that we can not make this
right but it has not gone unpunished.

society, we will not allow this to be
repeated.
And, by the way, although adult
(somatic) stem cells have been used
successfully for about 20 years now,
there has never been any successes
using embryonic stem cells. In fact,
there have been some dramatic and
dismal failures. I suspect the agenda
behind the big push for embryonic
stem cells, is to control reproductive
evolution.
Philosopher and theologian,
Richard John Newhaus sums it up
this way: "Thousands of ethicists,
and bioethicists, as they are called,
professionally guide the unthinkable,
on its passage through the debatable,
on its way to becoming the justifi-
able, until it is finally established as
the unexceptional." Think about it!
