Newspapers distribute bags for Bureau
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau will get a boost next week as
community newspapers across the
county again take part in the
Christmas bag prograrh.
In next week's issue of The
Citizen, subscribers will find a
brown paper bag sponsored by this
newspaper and several businesses
and industries. Printed on the bag,
along with sponsor information, are
details of where each of the county
bureaus are located and times gifts
and food can be dropped off. It also
provides information for people who
may need help this Christmas on
how to reach the bureau and register.
The RIDE season has begun and
Huron OPP made several arrests dur-
ing the first weekend of the program.
On Nov. 23 the first stop was con-
ducted in Blyth on County Rd. 25,

and blew a warn resulting in his dri-
ver's licence being seized for 12
hours. The 30-year-old male from
East Wawanosh was charged with a
liquor offence and had the vehicle
removed by a friend.

with _alcohol on his breath and was
given a roadside test that he failed.

Each year, the Bureau collects
food and gifts that assist more than
1,000 children and their families
across the county.
Karen Riddell of the Bureau said
the bag provides are excellent way
for people to collect food and gift
items together to bring them to the
Bureau and, when the newspaper
arrives with the, bag, is a reminder of
the Bureau's needs this year.
Of particular need are items for
teenagers, often overlooked by peo-
ple who enjoy picking out children's
toys when thinking of donating. "It
does mean a lot to us," said Riddell
of the success of the bag program,
with driving a motor vehicle with
over 80 mgs.
On Nov. 24 officers set up the
check on Hem Line in Usborne. A
27-year-old man from Grey Twp.,
was charged with a liquor offence.
Also a RIDE was set up on Huron
Road in Exeter and a vehicle stopped
in the program, contained open alco-
hol. The driver had alcohol on his
breath.
The 29-year-old male from
McGillivray Twp. was charged with
a liquor offence and blew a warn on
the alcotest resulting in his licence
being suspended for 12 hours.
That morning were called to a sin-
gle vehicle collision on North Line in
Seaforth. The officer discovered that
now in its fourth year.
Spearheaded by The Seaforth
Huron Expositor and the Seaforth
Lions Club and Agricultural Society,
newspapers across the county joined
forces to promote the use of the bags.
Riddell said they have seen dona-
tions increase since the bags have
been used as people tend to try to fill
them with items of food, toys and
gifts. "It really does pay off," she
said. "We want everyone to fill
them."
But Riddell also said financial
contributions help as well, allowing
Bureau managers to purchase items
that may be needed but weren't
a 1987 Pontiac Firebird had left the
roadway and struck a hydro pole.
The driver received minor injuries
and was later treated and released
from a local hospital.
During the investigation it was
learned that the driver had been
drinking and showed physical symp-
toms of impairment. He was taken
for breath tests and found to be two
times the legal limit allowed to
drive.
The 19-year-old from Seaforth has
been charged with impaired driving
and driving with over 80 mgs, He
will attend court in Goderich on
January.
