A look at life down at the Older, Bolder Cafe
By Carol
McDonnell
Sometimes
corny but usually
upbeat, the Rising
Stars have been
spreading their
philosophy of
aging around
Huron County. I
caught their show
At the Older Bolder Cafe at the
Wingham Adult Day Centre and later
spoke with their organizer Marguerite
Thomas.
Growing older beats the alternative
my husband says, but growing older
and bolder adds another dimension to
this statement. Marguerite explained
that growing bolder means to move
forward with courage, confidence and
a sense of control over your own des-
tiny, which we all want for as long as
(NC)-The pain of a heart attack
can feel as harmless as the discom-
fort of bad heartburn or as intense as
a crushing pain in the chest, some-
times with sweating, nausea or vom-
iting.
In some cases, symptoms are mild
enough to be discounted as merely
indigestion. Also, people often deny
that they are experiencing chest pain
and delay seeking help.
You should never ignore the pain
or discomfort in your chest. If you
think you are having a heart attack, it
is crucial to get help immediately.
Every year, an estimated 300,000
to 500,000 Canadians go to hospital
possible.
In 1999, a small group under the
leadership of Joan Chandler of
Sheatre joined together to dramatize
the challenges of aging in today's
society. Jean Young of the sponsoring
agency Wingham's Town and
Country Support Services, says this
initiative was to celebrate the Year of
the Older Persons.
Many of the original acting group
are still together and others have been
added in the following years. Thanks
to recent government grants the
Rising Stars were able to hold nine
full-day workshops on acting in order
to add to their acting abilities.
The café where various people stop
by is an ideal venue for exploring
seniors' concerns or celebrating their
victories. All of us have a similar
restaurant in our communities where
people gather on a regular basis.
emergency departments complain-
ing of chest pain. But Dr. James
Christenson and his team at St.
Paul's Hospital in Vancouver believe
at least two per cent of these people
are mistakenly sent home when they
are actually suffering a heart attack,
while more than 50 per cent spend at
least three hours in hospital when
they are not suffering a heart attack.
By studying 1,900 patients at two
large Vancouver hospitals, the team
hopes to develop criteria to help doc-
tors safely and efficiently determine
which patients are having a heart
attack.
Dr. Christenson's research is being
Some topics covered:
• coping with family and Christmas
• finding work for whatever reason
• leaving the family home and
downsizing space and belongings
• using new technology such as
bank cards
• dealing with depression
Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway
commented that, "The compensation
of growing old was ... the power
which adds the supreme flavour to
existence. the power of taking hold of
experience, of turning it around slow-
ly in the light."
Turning more aspects of aging to
the light , as it were, the Rising Star

A last bit of homespun humour
gleaned from the Older Bolder Cafe —
for every mile of road there were two
miles of ditches. But with a little help
from your friend you will be able to
stay out of those ditches and move
forward confidently.

Super Reads from the Public
Library — The Russlander by Sandra
Birdsell, a story of a Mennonite girl
growing up in Russia just before the
First World War. Extremely well writ-
ten, the character and location devel-
opment are so well done that you
become very involed in the
story.
Audio Books — great for listening
in the car on long trips: Fugitive
Pieces by Anne Michaels, follows a
Greek Jewish boy during and after
World War II .
