Obituaries
GORDON BOYD
ELLIOTT
The Blyth community
was saddened this week
by the passing of a well-
known businessman.
Gordon B. Elliott passed away
peacefully at the Clinton Public
Hospital on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001
with his family by his side. He was
in his 87th year.
Mr. Elliott was born in Blyth in
1915. He was the second of four
generations to operate Elliott
Insurance Brokers in Blyth, having
joined the firm in 1936.
In his early years, Mr. Elliott was
active in all aspects of village life
from sports to council. He was Past
Master of the Blyth Masonic Lodge
#303, as well as Past Grand Steward.
He touched the lives of many and
will be sadly missed by family and
friends. He was the beloved husband
of Betty (Johnston) Elliott and dear
father of John (Bev) Elliott, Donald
(Sandra) Elliott and Betsy (Bryan)
Allan all of -Blyth and daughter-in-
law Sharron Elliott of Goderich.
He is also survived by two broth-
ers Alex of Cambridge and Frank
(Dorothy)-of Blyth.
He will be remembered fondly by
his 12 grandchildren, six great
grandchildren and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Mr. Elliott was predeceased by a
son, Grant Nov. 11, 2001, a sister,
Gertrude and brother-in-law, Lloyd
Wettlaufer, formerly of Vancouver,
a brother, Bertram Elliott, formerly
of Blyth, as well as parents, J.H.R.
Elliott and Ada (Boyd) Elliott.
At Mr. Elliott's request there will
be no funeral home visitation or
funeral service.
Cremation will take place with a
private family graveside service at
the Blyth Union Cemetery at a later
date.
Elliott-Madill Funeral Home were
entrusted with the arrangements.
A tree will be planted as a
living memorial to Mr.
Gordon B. Elliott.
Letter from Jerusalem
Traveller sees ruins, visits Sea of Galilee
By Sandra Clark
Tomorrow is graduation day. We
will go to Ecce Homo for most of the
day but a very special event will be a
liturgy in the Garden Tomb. We will
have a social time on the terrace at
Ecce Homo which will enable us to
see the rooftops of Jerusalem. •
Last weekend was spent at a
Kibbutz Holiday Resort - Ein Gev. It
is right on the Sea of Galilee. From
our window Elizabeth and I looked at
the lights up on the Golan Heights
over the water. It was very beautiful.
We were very busy for those days.
We saw ruins at Beit Shean,
Capernaum, liturgy at Tagha, visited
the Church of the Primacy of Peter,
climbed up on Mount Arbel for a
liturgy, and had a private tour of
Hippos which was one of the ten pri-
mary Roman centres in Israel.
This is also on the old border
between Syria and Israel. The exca-
vation is only in the very early stagei
but there will be some interesting
finds. There is a huge church and a
smaller one. From this point you can
see all of the Galilee.
We went up one end of the Golan
and down the other on this trip. It
brought back memories of our visit
with my son when he lived on the
Kibbutz 'there. The descent is chal-
lenging to say the least. We were on a
big tour bus for this trip.
Our leader told us not to be embar-
rassed if we were nervous and want-
ed to close our eyes because the driv-
er was very frightened and had his
closed!
On Tuesday we did a walking tour
of the old city inside the walls. We
had the use of a chapel in the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre for a mass.
We then walked all over that
church. It's very sad to see the state it
is in with all the faiths jealously
guarding their portion of it. A few of
us ventured the opinion that it wasn't
very respectful to Jesus to see it all
chopped up that way.
I was in the little `cave' where his
tomb is believed to be and put my
hand down under the alter where His
cross supposedly stood. Many sites
here are believed to be and supposed
to be. Many of them have long histo-
ries of something special behind
them and are, therefore, more likely
to be authentic than some of the oth-
ers.
We were in the Upper Room which
is believed to be the site of the Last
Supper and the Pentecost. Down
below it is David's Tomb.
We were in a little chapel berong-
ing to some Coptic Monks. They are
very poor. They have been dispos-
sessed because of a lack of funds so
their circumstances are very sad.
They keep their chaael but live in lit-
tle tiny huts inside the building.
Some were Coptic and some were
Ethiopian. I have a picture of an eld-
erly Coptic monk with the smile of an
angel. He kissed me, kissed my
hands, waved at me. It was very

against human depravity's tendency
to push the limits into forbidden ter-
ritory that reaps darkness, crime, and
shame.
People's disgust at having to dear
with unsolicited pornographic
"spam" e-mail is just one example of
the downfalls of a relatively unregu-
lated system (the internet).
By upholding Biblical standards,
we not only honour God but also
build respect for our fellow man and
woman, countering the media's
temptation to exploit them as tanta-
touching.
Saturday morning Alan will pick
me up to take me home to Ganim for
a couple of days before I fly home. I
was lucky to have a few hours extra
with them because they came to Ein
Gev for an afternoon and evening.
The group was glad to have a chance
to question Alan about their lives on
the settlement. It is very difficult to
gain any sort of an understanding of
the situation here.
I'll be home on lbesday night.
Don't know how long it will take me
lizing objects to excite our baser
desires.
