From the Minister's Study
Community standards: who needs them?
By Pastor Ernest Dow
Living Water Christian
Fellowship
Are community standards "unde-
mocratic"?
On Nov. 20, the Ontario Film
Review Board refused to approve the
movie Fat Girl (A ma soeur) with-
out cuts first being made. The origi-
nal version of the French film about
two teenage sisters coming of age
includes scenes of nudity and sex
involving people under the age of 18.
Our province's Theatres Act gives
the review board discretion to ban
films showing people who are (or
appear to be) under 18 partially or
fully nude in sexually suggestive
contexts. OFRB chairperson Robert
Warren said such scenes in this
movie contravene community stan-
dards and set a precedent which
would allow other film-makers to
exploit under-age nudity and sex.
In response, there have been
protests. In one radio interviex., a
film director objected that "commu-
nity standards" are "undemocratic".
There have been calls for the OFRB
itself to be abolished, as Manitoba
ruled its own review board unconsti-
tutional some time ago.
Meanwhile, the movie in its full
version is being shown in other juris-
dictions such as Quebec, British
Columbia, the United States, and
Britain.
So, are we Ontarians being prud-
ish? Has the OFRB done us a valu-
able service by "drawing the line", or
is it time to do away with "undemo-
cratic" community standards?
Our country was founded on
Judeo-Christian values, so we turn to
the Bible to obtain moral guidance.
The original design for sex consisted
in a husband and wife discovering
the joys of physical intimacy in
becoming "one flesh"; this was part
of God's plan which received His
verdict of being "very good".
(Genesis 2:24; 1:31) Shame became
associated with viewing nakedness

after people rejected God's direction
for their lives. (Gen.3:6,7).
In the Old Tegtament, sex outside
marriage was sinful, and viewing
another's nakedness was shameful.
(Isaiah 47:3; Nahum 3:5) The patri-
arch Job made a covenant with his
eyes not to even look lustfully at a
girl. (Job 31:1)
This emphasis on avoiding sexual
sin continues in the New Testament.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus
said that a man who looks at a
woman lustfully has already com-
mitted adultery with her in his heart.
"The eye is the lamp of the body";
how we use it determines whether
we are filled with light or darkness.
(Matthew 5:28; 6:22).
Jesus identified sexual immorality
and lewdness as among the evils that
come from inside a person and make
them "unclean". (Mark 7:21-23) The
apostles continued this emphasis;
Paul taught that it is God's will that
believers avoid sexual immorality,
for "God did not-call us to be impure,
but to live a holy life." Those who
have been "bought at a price"
through. Christ's death for our sins at
the cross are to "flee from sexual
immorality" and thus honour God
with our whole being. (1
Thessalonians 4:3-7; 1 Corinthians
6:18-20).
Community standards may indeed
be "undemocratic" for society,
because -all are sinners. But that
doesn't mean standards aren't good
for us, placing a helpful restraint
