The day starts at 10 a.m. and the doors close at 4 p.m. Marie McGavin was the scripture reader. The sermon was Giving Out of Our Abundance. Ms Tuchlinsky referred to the poor widow who put two small coins into the treasury and Jesus said that she had given out of her poverty. Ms Tuchlinsky wondered if perhaps she might have given out of abundance. Her financial situation was one of poverty but perhaps she felt so blessed with what she did have and felt called to share what she had, trusting that God would meet her needs. Maybe she was just thankful to, be alive and had experienced God's presence even in the difficult times, she wondered. Maybe this woman, also was giving out of her abun- dance, her abundance of thanksgiv- ing and joy. The second letter of Paul to the Corinthian people suggests that his experience of the churches in Macedonia is that of people sharing, not out of their abundance of riches, for he stressed their extreme poverty, but out of their abundant joy. In fact, he says that they begged for the privilege of sharing in this ministry, going beyond what was expected. . Paul urges the people of Corinth to also consider giving, not out of feel- ing pressured or guilt, but out of joy. For those who are in a position of relative wealth compared to the majority of the people in the world, there is also the opportunity to share out of abundance of thanksgiving and joy for blessings, said Ms Tuchlinsky. "The Mission and Service Fund of the United Church is our way of reaching out to people across Canada and around the world. It is not an obligation, it is an opportunity for each of us to make a difference in the lives of-men, women and children in a very real and concrete way." The Mission and Service Fund in Huron-Perth Presbytery alone, sup- ports Group Delta, which provides counselling to help stop violence in families, youth ministries in the Listowel area, Huron Safe Homes and Stratford and area Access to Independent living. The United Church has 31 over- seas personnel working in 13 coun- tries and supports relief projects in 37 countries. "When each of us gives out of our abundance of thanksgiving and jdy, we are making a difference," she said. She completed her message by saying that people have an opportu- nity to give, not out of obligation or guilt, but because they recognize their blessings and desire to joyfully share with others. "Let us give thanks for GOd's grace present in our lives and live out our joy and gratitude in this com- munity and beyond."
