resident marks 90th birthday Grey

Long-time Grey Twp. resident Eleanor Hemingway was
honoured on Saturday afternoon during an open house at
Brussels United Church in recognition of her 90th birthday.

Eleanor Hemingway celebrated
her 90th birthday with an open house
at the Brussels United Church last
Sunday. She was born on Nov. 11,
1911 on Conc. 12, Grey Twp., east of
Cranbrook at her parents' home.
Hemingway, the daughter of
James and Christena Knight, attend-
ed school at Cranbrook and Listowel
high school. She went on to com-
plete her teaching qualifications at
Stratford Normal School.
Hemingway taught in several
schools including Walton.
She married the late Carl
Hemingway on July 27, 1935. After
spending a year in Brussels they
moved to the Woodstock area for
several years prior to returning to the
Hemingway family farm, which they
worked for 45 years.
Mrs. Hemingway had eight chil-
dren - Ruth Axtmann, Don
Hemingway DVM, Marion Godkin,
Dave Hemingway, Ross
Hemingway, Laurel East, Ray
Hemingway and Karen Phillips. She
also has 29 grandchildren and 20
great-grand children.
As many of the extended family as
possible attended a family dinner at
the White Carnation restaurant in
Holmesville.
While bringing up her children
she was an active member of the
community with an interest in the
Women's Institute and United
Church Women's group.
Hemingway has also had a long
standing interest in the horticultural
society.
She says her long life has taught
her that it's good advice to, "be fair,
be firm and be fun."
The Sunday afternoon open house
B. Hallahan turns 100
It was a special day at Huronlea on
Saturday as family members gath-
ered to help Beatrice Hallahan cele-
brate her 100th birthday.
- Born in Benmiller on Nov. 10,
1901. Mrs. Hallahan was the daugh-
-ter of the later Martin and Jane
(Hamilton) Mugford. She attended
No. 4 Colborne Twp. school.
In 1919, Mrs. Hallahan married
Harry Riordan and raised five chil-
dren, Norman, Dorothy, Grant, Ray
and Harry. Besides being a house-
wife and mother, she worked as a
telephone operator, until retiring in
1961.
Widowed, Mrs. Hallahan married
Simon Hallahan in 1962 and resided
it East Wawanosh Twp. She moved
to Huronlea after her husband's
death.
Listing her grandchildren as her
special interests, Mrs. Hallahan was
pleased to have family members
joining her on this special day from
Ottawa, Toronto, Strathroy,
Ingersoll, Mitchell, Kitchener and
Blyth and area.
Special guest were Laura and Ken
Grigg of Auburn.

Twin sisters celebrate 80th
On Nov. 4, sisters Pat Davis
(Raymond) and Priscilla Bray
(Raymond) celebrated their upcom-
ing 80th birthday together with sis-
ters, Esther and Jack McCutcheon,
Betty Cowing and brother Bob and
Doreen Raymond.
A surprise dinner was held fol-
lowed by a dessert and coffee party
at Pat and Jim's home in Lucan.
The sisters were born on Nov. 26,
1921 in Rockglen, Saskatchewan.
They moved with their- family to the
Brussels area in 1937.
The 60th wedding anniversary was
as well a reason for congratulations
and celebration as Pat was married to
Jim Davis and Priscilla was married
to Cliff Bray on Nov. 15, 1951 in a
double wedding at St. John's
Anglican Church, Brussels.
