doing the same show over and over.
Having a script will be a change as
well. "The show is scripted to pro-
duce memories and give background
into the Don Messer show," said
Swan, "but the principal part is to
remember the music and people who
presented it."
"I am comfortable that will be the
approach. That's the way Tremaine
presented it," he said, promising, the
production will be like the television
show with its "nice, tight emphasis
on music".

Blyth celebrates
national win
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
When the all new Memories of a
Don Messer Jubilee Christmas
comes to Blyth, Nov. 22, the voice of
host Don Tremaine will be quite
familiar, especially to residents of
South-Western Ontario.
Radio and television personality
Jim Swan said that when he hosted
CKNX's Circle 8 Ranch many years
ago, he had watched Tremaine's
work on the Don Messer show and
used it as a template. "I emulated the
smooth Don Tremaine."
Now, he will have the chance to
show what he learned when he tours
with the Jubilee Christmas beginning
Nov. 17 in Cornwall and wrapping
up Nov. 27 in Brantford. The Blyth
date will be performed at Memorial
Hall.
Local residents will remember
Swan from his time at CKNX
between 1964 and 1977. He first
became known as the announcer on
the morning radio show. "FM wasn't
established yet. I actually helped
design the FM control room but
never got to use it."
Swan also did a kids' show and of
course his work on Circle 8 Ranch.
As well he worked on radio features
including Your Town and Hi,
Neighbours. "I went through the
weeklies each week and found the
kind of chatty pieces that reflect our
community life. It was great fun and

Kicking things off
The Rising Stars Troupe kicked off their entertainment series at the Town and Country dinner
in Brussels last week. The troupe offers entertainment and fellowship, while providing a posi-
tive outlet to seniors. Some have been together since 1999. The production they performed
was called Growing Older Bolder. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Swan hosts 'Jubilee'
kept me in touch with the local com-
munity."
Having moved to London, where
he spent 18 years in television, Swan
has spent the past five years free-
lancing as a media consultant and
emcee.
It was his emcee work at the fiddle
contest in Fergus which inadvertent-
ly led to his most recent gig. The
contest was originated by Mery
Woods, whose son, Scott, was about
15. Today he is a champion fiddler
who joined the memories tour in
1998. His talent is displayed in the
Jubilee tour as he portrays Don
Messer.
With both Tremaine, now in his
70s and working as an immigration
judge, and Sandy Hoyt who previ-
ously took on the part, opting not to
be involved in this tour, Swan's
name came up through his connec-
tion with the Woodses.
While Swan said he has been
involved in "hundreds of shows", it
will be take some getting used to
