N. Huron
wants info
before
committing
to scanner
By Bonnie Gropp
Citizen editor
North Huron council continues to
seek information regarding users
before making any commitment to
the purchase of anew CT scanner for
the Walkerton hospital.
At the Oct. 15 meeting, Councillor
Arnold Taylor reported that he had
contacted the chair of the fundraising
committee about council's concerns.
North Huron had been approached
for a donation of $75,000 towards
'the cost of the scanner, as there
would be people from North Huron
using it. However, there was no
accompanying data stating exactly
how many from the township.
Taylor said he was informed that
the hospital did not have the soft-
. ware package to pull that informa-
tion together. Taylor said he then
contacted the hospital's finance
department and "basically got the
same message."
He explained to council that the
committee was also putting together
a fundraising calendar which would
include the names of the contributing
municipalities. If North Huron did
not respond with a financial commit-
ment by Tuesday they could not be
on the calendar.
Taylor said he also contacted
Hanover to see what they did, as they
had been asked for $90,000. They
agreed --to• pay 50 per cent. And
though Hanover indicated that they
have knowledge of the number of°
people who use Hanover physicians,
Taylor said, "it still doesn't answer
the questions of what municipalities
use the scanner."
North Huron currently has no
money in the budget to support the
scanner. And Taylor, added, the
Wingham hospital had just pur-
chased X-ray equipment for which
they will be seeking funding. "I
think this has to be considered."
Councillor Archie MacGowan
agreed, stressing the importance of
knowing how many local users there
would be. "I am shocked they didn't
foresee these questions coming," he
said of Walkerton. "That information
has to be available at some level."
Councillor Jeff Howson said he
had spoken with some people who
noted that residents of -Walkerton had
had tests done on equipment at the
Clinton hospital. "Would those peo-
ple be prepared to pay towards that?"
Should council consider a lump
sum, it should, Howson said, be
directed locally.
Taylor drew attention as well to
the Huron Perth hospital partnership
of which Walkerton is not part.
"It's a very worthy cause," said
MacGowan, "but until we get those
figures..."
Council, expressing little worry
over not being included on the
fundraising calendar agreed to look
at the request during next year's
budget planning.
