Wingham hospital foundation launches Campaign 2001
By Jim Brown
• Winghani Advance-Times
Campaign 2001, Picture Your
Health, was launched last Friday in
the Terrace Room of the Wingham
and District Hospital.
The fundraising campaign by the
WDH Foundation will assist in the
purchase of new digital, diagnostic
imaging equipment to replace the
present, out-dated X-ray machine.
Over 8,000 brochures were mailed
out late last week outlining the cam-
paign to households within the
catchment area of the hospital.
At last Friday's kick-off,
Foundation Chairman Ross Davies
said the $1.2 million digital imaging
X-ray system already has been pur-
chased by the hospital.
"This new equipment will provide
reduced radiation exposure for the
radiologists and patients, improved
X-ray images, computerized view-
ing, reduced exposure to chemicals,
the capability to transmit digital
images to other hospitals and doc-
tors, and most important, better serv-
ice for the patients," he stated.
The foundation is leading a cam-
paign called Picture Youth Health
with the goal of raising the funds
necessary to purchase and install the
new equipment.
Davies stated the foundation has
already committed $600,000 toward
the new X-ray system.
"But that is not enough," he
emphasized. "Public donations are
needed to complete the funding of
this purchase."
The word foundation is used to
describe the organization which rais-
es funds for the hospital, continued
Davies. However, the word founda-
tion also . is used to describe the
underlying support upon which a
building or structure stands.
"Every contribution by the public,
every donation, will provide our hos-
pital with the foundation necessary
for its staff to supply its patients with
the quality care they need and
deserve," stated Davies.
"One day you may picture your
health on this-new digital imaging x-
ray equipment," he cold those pres-
ent.
WDH board chairman Judith
Gaunt said in an era of fiscal
restraint and demands for balanced
budgets from the provincial ministry
of health and long-term care, ,it
is good to have the hospital founda-
tion.
Although she has attended only
one meeting of the foundation, she
said with the energy and dedication
of the members at that meeting, the
campaign should be successful.
"We are a small hospital, but we
provide quality care that is not
matched in many larger hospitals,"
said Gaunt, adding the government
has provided less than $60,000 for
capital equipment costs this year at
Wingham.
"This new diagnostic imaging
equipment alone casts over one mil-
lion dollars," she stated. ':We must
seek outside help."
The board chairman acknowl-
edged the support of the foundation,
both in the past and at present. She
also thanked the community for its
continued support.
Huron Perth Hospitals Partnership
Vice-President and Site
Administrator Margret Comack said
this is a tremendous recruitment tool
for bringing in physicians to rural
communities because ease of access
to information is very important for
them.
She added that radiology staff and
physicians are presently undergoing
training. "We should be providing
full service with the new equipment
by January," she said.
Comack stated this equipment is
the largest capital purchase ever
made by the hospital.
She added that the images from
this equipment can be accessible
through local physicians' offices
provided they are connected.
"We are operating this year at less
than what the province provided us
in 1992," she stated. "However, we
are still operating as efficiently as
possible."
According to Comack, much of
the hospital's existing equipment is
outdated, but through the fundraising
effort of the foundation the hospital
is able to update its equipment.
"I am impressed by the planning
that has gone into this campaign. The
(foundation) people have put in a lot
of volunteer hours."
"Without the support of the com-
munity, our hospital could be in
jeopardy," she noted.
Hospital Chief of Staff Dr. Marie
Gear stated this project brings the
Wingham hospital into the 21st cen-
tury.
She indicated that diagnostic
imaging can help to maintain and
enhance the services of the radiolog-
ical department.
As well as being Ale to transfer
the images to other locations, they
will be able to store the images,
which will help to decrease the costs
to the hospital.
"I am proud and happy to have this
equipment at the hospital," stated
Gear.
