Brussels Livestock report
Friday's calves sell $2-$3 higher at sale
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Oct.
12 were 3,172 head of cattle, 412
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday fed steers and heifers
sold on a strong active trade. The
cows sold steady to last week. On
Thursday the veal market was selling
at prices $5 higher with the lambs
selling $10 higher. On Friday the
calves sold at prices $2 to $3 higher
while the yearlings sold steady.
There were 436 steers on offer
selling from $98 to $100 with sales
to $111. One charolais steer con-
signed by Dave Eadie, Holyrood,
weighed 1,375 lbs. and sold to
Dominion Meats for $111.
Seventeein steers consigned by
Clarence W. Martin, Mount Forest,
averaged 1,182 lbs. for an average of
$102.55. His top four limousin steers
averaging 1,113 lbs. selling for $109.
Lorne Benedict, Kerwood, con-
signed eleven steers averaging 1,436
lbs. selling for an average of $101.40
with his top limousin steer weighing
1,355 lbs. selling for $103.50.
Seven black steers consigned by
Johnston Farms, Bluevale, averaged
1,376 lbs. and sold to Moyer Packing
Co. for $103.85. Their overall con-
signment of twenty-four steers aver-
aged 1,423 lbs. selling for an average
of $100.70.
Murray Shiell, Wingham, con-
signed twenty-two steers averaging
1,410 lbs. selling for an average of
$100.17 with his top fourteen black
steers averaging 1,356 lbs. selling to
Moyer Packing Co. for $102.60.
Thirty-nine steers consigned by
Cunningham Farms, Lucan, aver-
aged 1,433 lbs. for an average of
$99.53. Their top roan steer weighed
1,365 lbs. and brought $104.
Cunningham Farms, Woodstock,
consigned one limousin steer weigh-
ing 1,390 lbs. which was purchased
Evert Ridder, RR2, Clinton was
named winner of the Huron County
Federation of Agriculture Award for
Outstanding Contribution to
Agriculture at the group's annual
meeting in Seaforth, Thursday.
Ridder, who stepped down as a
regional director to the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture at the
meeting, was chair of the federation's
environment committee and the insti-
gator - of the Environmental
Coalition, explained Charles Regele,
Huron federation president. Working
by Ryding Regency for $103.75.
Their overall consignment of eleven
steers averaged 1,455 lbs. for an
average of $99.10.
Six steers consigned by Leonard
Black, Proton Station, averaged
1,432 lbs. for an average of $98.69
with two RWF steers averaging
1,373 lbs. bringing his top price of
$103.50. Mike Drost, Staffa, con-
signed eleven steers averaging 1,708
lbs. selling for an average of $97.45
with his top gold steer weighing
1,585 lbs. which sold for $102.76.
Twenty-six steers consigned by
Melvin L. Martin, averaged 1,388
lbs. selling for an average of $97.27
with sales up to $102.50.
There were 261 heifers on offer
selling from $98 to $100 with sales
to $105. Andy VanderVeen, Blyth,
consigned one limousin heifer
weighing 1,075 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meats for $105. His over-
all consignment of nine heifers aver-
-aged 1,305 lbs. for an average of
$100.01. One limousin heifer con-
signed by Merkley Farms, Wroxeter,
weighed 1,305 lbs. and sold to
Norwich Packers for $104. Their
overall consignment of ten heifers
averaged 1,216 lbs. for an average
price of $98.18.
Adam Brubacher, Wroxeter, con-
signed six heifers averaging 1,313
lbs. selling for an average of $100.87
with sales up to $102.75. Twenty-
two heifers consigned by Bill
Wassnidge, Ailsa Craig, averaged
1,303 lbs. selling for an average of
$100.05 with his top three black
heifers averaging 1,260- lbs. for
$102.75.
Melvin W. Bearinger, Mount
Forest, consigned six charolais
heifers averaging 1,131 lbs. selling
for $102. His overall consignment of
forty-one heifers averaged 1,222 lbs.
selling for an average of $99.81. Six
with past president Pat Down, he was
able to secure funding from
Canadapt for a study of groundwater
in Huron. He sits on the technical
review committee for the Huron
County Healthy Futures program.
Ridder is also past president of the
Hensall District Co-operative, a past
zone director of United Co-opera-
tives of Ontario and a past president
of the Huron County Corn Producers.
As well he is active with the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority.

weighed an average of 1,235 lbs. and
sold for an average price of $99.11
with sales up to $102.25. Tom Hem,
Woodham, consigned five heifers
averaging 1,360 lbs. selling for an
average of $98.59 with sales to
$101.25. Six heifers consigned by
Walter McClure, Seaforth, averaged
1,058 lbs. selling for an average of
$96.83 with sales up to $100.75.
There were 213 cows on offer. DI
and D2 cows sold $60 to $65 with
sales to $80; D3, $56 and $60; D4,
$47 to $56. Ikendale Farms,
Walkerton, consigned one holstein
cow weighing 1,435 lbs. selling to
Aylmer Meat Packers for $80. One
holstein cow consigned by Adrian
VanGills weighed 1,095 lbs. which
sold for $77. A-Z Farms consigned
one holstein cow weighing 1,095 lbs.
selling for $77.
There were 17 bulls on Offer sell-
ing from $63 to $79.50 with sales to
$83. Nelson Dow, Wingham, con-
signed one simmental bull which
weighed 2,085 lbs. and sold to
Levinoff Meat Products Ltd. for $83.
One gold bull consigned by Brent
Weber, Mildmay, weighed 1,915 lbs.
and sold to Aylmer Meat Packers for
$82.

was returned as president of the
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture at the group's annual
meeting in Seaforth, Thursday.
Neil Vincent, RR3, Wingham was
named first vice-president while
Nick Whyte, RR2, Seaforth was
named second vice-president.
Victor Roland, RR1, Gorrie was
named regional director to the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture
from Huron East, covering the for-
mer townships of Grey, Morris,
McKillop, Tumberry and Howick.
Marilyn Broadfoot, RR5, Clinton
was named regional director for
Huron West, covering the former
Wilkinson said.
Meanwhile in Quebecl where there
is more support for pork processing
than in Ontario, the workforce has
expanded 50 per cent.
If the Ontario government wants to
stimulate the economy then get the
Nutrient Management Act in place
quickly and many farmers who are
holding hack on new barns will start
to build because they'll know the
rules, Wilkinson predicted.
While farmers here look at the
U.S. and worry about higher subsi-
dies there for farmers, in comparison
to the rest of the world Canadian
farmers still have clout, Wilkinson
said.

Wayne Hamilton, RR I, Varna was
returned as regional director for
Huron South (Hay, Stephen,
Usbome, Stanley, and Tuckersmith).

Wroxeter and Jeff Robinson, RR4,
Walton, with Dave Linton, RR2,
Blyth as alternate.

Minister Tony ,Blair announced the
abolition of the ministry of agricul-
ture saving that there was1 more
money in agri-tourism than in agri-
cultural production. The National
Farmers Union in Britain, once one
of the most.powerful farm groups in
the world, now is ineffective,
Wilkinson said.
But in the pork price disaster of
1998, the only farmers in the world
that got additional government help
were in Canada. "The farm commu-
nity knew how to lobby," Wilkinson
said.
He

for ,farmers. "We're where we are
today because we're involved," he
said.
