Home & Garden 2001 The 4 basic elements of window decor According to experts in the win- dow decor industry, there are four basic elements you need to consider when trying to determine which-win- dow coverings will best suit your needs. Yasmin Siboldi, manager of a leading manufacturer and retailer of custom blinds and shades, lists the four basic elements as: Insulation, Light Control, Privacy and Visual appeal. Insulation If cutting energy costs is high on your list, pleated and cellular pleated shades are the best choice. The air pockets within them actually insulate By David Blaney Citizen staff The walls are repainted. The rug is shampooed. The drapes are back from the cleaners. All this and still the redecoration did not achieve what was wanted. ToO often the outside of a room is redecorated and the furniture occu- pying most of the space is ignored. The redecorator doesn't need to buy new because refinishing is often a low cost option. Refinishing or more properly restoration can usually return furniture to its full beauty and usefulness at less than half the cost of new pieces, There is considerable confusion as to exactly what refinishing means. Properly done it does not mean com- pletely stripping an old finish and sanding down to bare white wood. That approach may by necessary for a heavily painted and scarred piece but it severely damages the value of a good antique. Wherever possible a restorer will attempt to remove an old finish and repair damage without totally removing the patina from a good antique. How the finish is removed depends on its type and depth. Old wax fin- ishes can be removed with nothing more than a vigorous mixture of elbow grease and paint thinner. Shellac succumbs to. methyl hydrate, and lacquer will dissolve into lacquer Quality you can count on... If you want maximum efficiency, triple cell cellular: shades block a full 75 per cent of heat transfer. Wood blinds and substantial draperies are also good insulators. Light control Slatted treatments, including woods, metals, and verticals, give you the widest range of subtle light- ing gradations-from filtered light to total privacy: At the other extreme, room-dark- ening fabrics and liners are available in many window treatment styles, thinner or a mixture of lacquer thin- ner and methyl hydrate. The real problem comes when lay- ers of paint or the newer varnishes are tackled. These types of finish require stronger and more caustic removers. Although several 'envi- ronmentally friendly' strippers have appeared in the last few years, the sad fact is that they don't work as. well or as fast as the traditional mix- tures. There is also considerable discus- sion among refinishers about exactly how friendly a chemical cark be if it is capable of removing several layers of paint. Regardless of what approach is used, the do-it-yourselfer has to keep safety in mind. The chemicals used to remove old finishes and reapply new ones all present hazards. Proper ventilation is a must. The fumes can be highly toxic and lacquer thinner and methyl hydrate are very volatile. The caustic removers are capable of causing severe chemical burns and all the chemicals are poisonous if a child was to swallow them. Gloves and eye protection are a must. Applying a new finish has become much easier in the last few years. Although the home refinisher can't produce the look of a sprayed-on fac- tory finish, the new urethane varnish- es can be smoothly applied with a brush or from a spray can. 519-524-9671 Fax: (519) 524-6962 53 Victoria S.,Goderich, N7A 3H6 ,Suppliers of... VANGUARD STEEL ttln including fabric shades, roller shades, cellular and pleated shades'? Privacy Virtually every window treatment category includes choices that afford, good privacy. Outside-mounted' shades deliver the most privacy — but they can also obscure attractive win- dow frames. When considering inside-mounted privacy choices, consider that blinds add flexible light control; cellular shades provide insulation and light filtering; fabric treatments deliver a vast variety of decorator looks along with privacy. Visual appeal More than one coat with a light sanding in between will be neces- sary, but care and patience can pro- duce a durable and elegant finish. The range of premixed colours in liquid or paste form has increased to the extent that most shades can be found. For the more adventursome-it is possible to produce the in-between tints by mixing the available colours. The new stains are easy to use and need only care and attention to instructions to apply properly. Refinishing, either by the owner or a professional can be an attractive alternative to buying new. Cost, con- venience and practicality must all be considered when a homeowner decides which route to follow. This is where your unique decorat- ing style comes into play. Are you attracted to the soft beauty of fabric treatments? Or are you drawn to the rich look of wood blinds and warm natural textures of natura! Roman shades. Or perhaps you prefer the sleek, streamlined look metal blinds can offer. By balancing your personal taste with the functional considerations for each of your rooms, you will be able to choose coverings that best compliment your setting. - News Canada r CABLE • Galvanized Aircraft Cable 1/16" to 5/16" • Wire Rope 3/8' to 314' • Stainless Steel Cable 1/16' •1/4" • PVC Cable 118' • 3116' Clear 8 White Coat j ROPE • Polypropylene 1/4" to 1/2" • Nylon 114",1/2"„ 5/8", 1" • Hemp 1/2", 3/4", 7/8", 1" CHAIN Grade 30, 3/16" to 1/2" Wide range of thimbles, shackles, cable clamps, etc. Other sizes and grades available by order Above are stock items gio0,5€01 Custom-made LOGGING CHOKERS Refinishing or restoration restores furn iture's beauty
