A finish that penetrates into the wood fibres will produce much bet- ter results than one that seals only the surface of the wood. Step 4 — Decorate! This is the most fun part. Add a trellis with hanging plants, a couple of flower boxes on the rail, or big potted plants around the perimeter of the deck. You can also create mood with unique outdoor lighting such as lanterns strung along the railing, cit- ronella candles on the deck or torch - es in the yard. You may also consider staining your railings or posts white or anoth- er accent color for a two-toned look . Give your deck a makeover Does your deck look like a weath- er beaten raft? Before the harsh win- ter weather floats in, consider giving your deck a makeover. Fall weather. can be a perfect time for accomplish- ing those tasks that you just couldn't find time for this past spring. Here are some simple steps for your deck makeover from a compa- ny that makes exterior wood care products. Step 1— Repair. Tighten loose bolts and secure floor boards. Inspect underneath for mildew or rotting wood, then -sink protruding nails. Replace any rotting boards or railings. Step 2 — Clean. You will be surprised what a dif- ference a good cleaning will make. It will remove dirt, grime and the gray colour from your deck. A word of caution: use a non- bleach cleaner especially made for wood. Bleach can harm the delicate surface fibers of the-wood. Here's another tip: If your deck doesn't seem to come clean with a deck cleaner you may need to remove build up of an old clear or water seal finish. Step 3 — Protect. You'll be so pleased with the results of your cleaning you may feel that you're finished, but to keep that beautiful, natural look, you need to protect the deck. Try an oil-based penetrating finish to show off the Tips to keep winter chill out When the cool fall breeze starts to blow, it's time to think about getting your home ready for the winter months ahead. The following tips from the Canadian Oil Heat Association will not only keep you toasty this winter, but keep your energy costs down as well: 1. Preset -your system's thermostat to lower the temperature in the evenings and daytime if no one is home. This alone will cut your costs by as much as 10 per cent. 2. Keep your furnace clean, lubri- cated and properly adjusted. Clean or replace-the filter regularly. 3. Close off heating or cooling to rooms and areas that don't need it. 4.Keep your radiator or vents clear of dust and dirt. These items can obstruct your vents and make your system work harder. 5. If your heating system is old and inefficient, you may want to replace it. Year after year of savings over- ride the initial payout, and a high- efficiency oil-fired burner will cut • costs by as much as 25 per cent a year. 6. Clean your ducts. It will improve indoor air quality and airflow so your furnace doesn't have to work • as hard. 7.-Check windows and doors and block any drafts. 8. Insulate attic. access and trap doors. 9. Repair any holes in the roof, walls, doors, ceilings, windows and floors. 10. Install storm windows.
