Potential revealed in farmhouse renovation
From old to new
It's virtually impossible to see where the old house left off and the new house begins with the
recent addition to the home of Allan and Cheryl Krotz. (Bonnie Gropp photo)

Sometimes you have to live with
something for awhile to realize its
potential.
Cheryl and Allan Krotz moved
into their farmhouse, located west of
Brussels, in 1986.
The fairly small one and a half
storey dwelling they humbly
described as "rundown", was for the
young family a place to start, a
home.
As time went on, however, and
their family grew ( brother Nolan,
now 17, sister Jenna. now 16 were
joined by Kelby, a decade ago) they
began thinking about what they
could do with the old house.
One of the first steps, which hap-
pened about the same time as Kelby
arrived was to tear down an old sun-
porch at the east side of the house
and put on a small addition.
While the idea of an expansion at
-the back (the north side of the house)
was forming, the Krotzes began a
transformation in the existing front
portion in 1997, gutting the interior,
drywalling, residing and putting on a
new roof.
"We just kind of stumbled on,"
said Allan.
was the home's halt storey-design,
which made fitting in the dormers
somewhat challenging.
"When we started the front, the
back end was already on paper," said
Krotz.
In the first phase, as the older
home was remodelled, the three
small upstairs bedrooms were
changed into a master suite. The for-
mer sunroom now became a living
room and the three children were set
up in two small rooms downstairs
across the hall. With little privacy or
space they were needless to say,
eagerly awaiting the addition, said
Cheryl.
This past July, the old portion at
the back was torn down. The final
result is an enlarged kitchen and din-
ing area with an adjacent family sit-
ting room. There is a mud room,
laundry room and downstairs wash-
room.
The space in this area has just
