Area students among CHSS award recipients Blyth grads Former Blyth students received the Norman Parks Garrett award at Central Huron Secondary School's commencement on Friday night. (Vicky Bremner photo) Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton held its Commencement ceremony on Oct. 5 and a number of area students received awards. Sarah Bokhout, Michelle Cook, Raymond deBoer, Dawn Dolmage, Heather Elliot, Kelly Vandendool and Laurie Vandendool all received honours in Grade 9. Sarah Bokhout also received the Bartliff's Bakery Award for general proficiency. Grade 10 honours went to Elizabeth MacGregor, who also received the Fairholme Dairy Award for general. proficiency. Honours standing in Grade 11 was achieved by Stephanie Bokhout, Jamie Lewis Aron Nonkes and Michael Walsh. In Grade 12 Anthony deBoer and Blair Trewartha received honours. Several Grade 9 students were given awards in specific subject areas - Michelle Cook, business; Dawn Dolmage, French; Raymond deBoer, math and and geography and Laurie Vandendool, physical education. The A.H. Carter awards for science went to Sarah Bokhout, Raymond deBoer and Jenna Taylor. The Carter Awards were also received by Grade 10 students, Elizabeth MacGregor and and Andy Toll. In Grade II Lori Wilts received the Robinson English Award, Chris Lammerant the Volvo Motor Graders Limited Award and Jenny Ritchie the B&M Fine Furniture Award. Several local students at the Grade 12 and OAC. level received awards at the ceremony. Anthony deBoer accepted the Huron Tire and Auto Award. The Clinton Radar Scholarship in tech- nology went to Darrell McDougall and Kim Hulley received the Clinton Optimist Club Co-op Award for the student with the best success in a placement involving children or youth. Joel Thomas received the Senior Food Service Award. Steve Jankowski received the Canon-OE London Award given to a student pursuing a career in graphic arts. Jankoski and Zoellyn Onn were awarded Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation Scholarships. Norman Parks Garrett Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Misty Blair, Ashley Howson, Darrell McDougall and Rachel Morrison. Blair was also named a Central Huron Scholar and awarded an "Aiming For The Top" tuition schol- arship. The area's other Central Huron Scholar was Wesley Beacon. Jessica Bokhout and Steve Huron County's health inspectors are doing barely half the number of inspections of food premises as they should be under provincial guide- lines, a report to county council says. The Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines call for three inspections a year for high-risk premises like nursing homes and full menu restaurants, two inspections of medium risk establishments like bakeries and many restaurants and one visit a year to low risk outlets for ready-to-eat foods such as, milk stores. In 2000, health inspectors man- aged to make 55 per cent of the calls they should on low risk premises, 53 per cent on medium risk locations Jankowski were named Ontario Scholars. Bokhout also received the Central Huron Secondary School teachers' award for leadership and the George Jefferson memorial Scholarship for the best six OAC credits over two years, as well as a W.D. Fair Scholarship for proficien- cy in English. Jankowski was also awarded the Municipality of Central Huron Award for his contributions to all aspects of school life. The Angela Konarski Memorial Award, which is given to an outgo- ing and friendt'S, Grade 11 student who has demonstrated an interest in helping others, through involvement -in school and community activities was awarded to Candi Flynn. This year's valedictorian was Jessica Bokhout. but only 26 per cent on high risk establishments. The 51 per cent overall compliance matched the 1999 rate and was up considerably from the 35 per cent in 1998 and only 18 per cent in 1997. Lack of staff may be the problem in meeting regulations, the report from the health and planning com- mittee said, but a time and activity tracking system has been instituted to see if staff time is being used as efficiently as possible.
