From the Minister's Study Give thanks in all circumstances, says pastor - The night He was betrayed, Jesus is described as "troubled in spirit" (John 13:21). ' He was moved to compassion (when confronted by those suffering from diseases such as blindness or leprosy (Matthew 20:34, Mark 1:41). Christ responded both emotionally and practically. But His faith in His Heavenly Father brought Him bi1ck to a point of lasting inner joy and thankfulness. The apostle Paul wrote that those who have faith in God do not_ grieve in the same way "as do those who have no hope" ( I Thessalonians 4:13). We benefit from an assurance that nothing can separate us from God's love; no hardship, not even death itself, can cut us off from God's long-term commitment to us who look to Him to accomplish His loving purposes in our lives. a Mission in Service theme of Maitland Presbyterial By Pastor Ernest Dow Living Water Christian Fellowship Robert Louis Stevenson said, "The person who has stopped being thank- ful . has fallen asleep in life." Thanksgiving holiday is the perfect opportunity to stop and thank God for all the blessings we've received in life. In Canada, the holiday was officially instituted by Parliament on Jan. 31, 1957 when it proclaimed: "A day of general thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful har- vest with which Canada has been blessed..." to be observed on the sec- ond Monday in October. It's relatively easy to give thanks when things are going well: your health is good, your family is safe, the crops are a success, and your community is a "national winner"... But what about when times are Mission in Service was the theme for the Maitland Presbyterial fall rally held on Sept. 24 at South Kinloss Presbyterian Church. Supper prepared by South Kinloss WMS was enjoyed by all. The evening program began with a sing-song led by Margaret deBoer. Marjorie Deyell and Ruth Buchmeir welcomed everyone. Following opening worship, sev- eral items of business were dealt with. Everyone was reminded that it is time to renew subscriptions to Glad Tidings. God's Word in the Bible counsels us to "give thanks in all circum- stances"; and to be "always giving thanks to God-the Fattier for every- thing, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 5:20) It doesn't come naturally to be thankful in all circumstances, in everything. This doesn't mean that those who follow Christ are to always wear a wan smile when disaster strikes, or that we're not supposed to grieve. Jesus was deeply touched emotional- ly and wept when the brother of his dear friends Mary and Martha died (John 11:33,35). to be in by Dec. 15: Shirley Hawthorne of Lucknow is Presbyterial treasurer, replacing Eileen Chambers as she has moved to Kemptville. He sang, "Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior." Mike replied, "It's touch and go. She recognized me. We prayed together and held hands. And then we quoted the passage about thanks- giving in the book of James -that -says, 'Consider it joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds...— He added, "You know, it's impos- sible to be anxious and thankful at the same time." /2011020120202021,2172h. 3 3 3 8 3 ec • • wing, water au/its-dem rellataship Oct. 14 Exercising Your Spiritual Gift \, a Pastor: Ernest Dow 523-4848 www.tcc.on.ca/-dowfam lograwwwwww. 3 9:30 a.m. - Sunday School 1. for all ages, 10:30 a.m. - Worship 3 at Blyth Public School, corner of King & Mill 3
