Sports Senior C team hits Blyth ice this season As another winter approaches, the Village of Blyth is preparing for the hockey season. As well as minor hockey booking their ice and finding coaches for their teams, a new league is taking shape. The league is the Senior C, new to the area, but not unlike the current WOAA Senior A league. With the assistance of the Ontario Hockey Association, Bob Taylor, Ripley, set out to develop a league for players who were too old for juvenile, but who didn't want to play rec hockey. Taylor has been the WOAA juve- nile convenor for a number of years, and knows a lot of the area's players. The 2001 racing season at Walton winds up this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14 in e unique format with the emphasis on participation. For quads it starts at 10 a.m. Saturday when racers pull the trigger in four-lane,, head-to-head grass drags, then go nuts in hare scrambles mayhem. He contacted people in Ripley, Tees water, Drayton, Tiverton, Mildmay, Brussels and. Blyth. He also contacted the Senior A Goderich Pirates, Lucknow Lancers, and Wingham Spitfires. None of the Senior teams were interested in leav- ing the other league. After a few meetings, the fees and rules were set, and the league was a go. The OHA decided to take the league under their umbrella, which is the same group which currently looks after the areas Junior B, C and Development leagues. By the Sept. 15 deadline, there were four teams who could ice a Saturday the COSDRA 2001 sum- mer grass drag tour starts at 11:30 a.m. The top sled teams battle at over 100 mph on the only independently timed four-lane system in the world! Motocross racers from across Ontario and adjoining states flock to Walton for the opportunity to clash elbow to elbow on the renowned national track, home of the annual TransCan Grand National Championship as part of the CMRC Fox Fall Hi-Point Motocross Series. Saturday, Oct. 13 features vintage racing only with classes for pre 1974, 1975-'81 and 1982-'87. Sunday, Oct. 14 features the annual "Ride with Don" race for parents, mechanics, and first-timers to put or shut up, with trophies for the top 10. Many of the rules of the league are the same as the Senior A league, with a few exceptions. Teams may only use players who played at some time in the town's minor hockey system. This will give the league a home- grown feeling. The other major difference in the two leagues is that in the Senior C league the players must wear a full face mask. Besides the obvious pro- tection issues, by wearing a mask it cuts each team's insurance fees in half. CMRC membership is not required for first time participants.
