Karla, with her face painted as a white-face clown, came down the aisle from the back of the church holding a large red paper heart. She had a huge smile on her face and seemed so full of love and joy. Then she began to discover money, all kinds of money. Soon her pockets were stuffed with money, the smile was gone and the the heart was thrown away. There were a few with tired eyes and I'm sure, sore fingers but the quitters who showed up at Duff's United Church last week to work on the 1902 quilt finished the job. Thanks to Marion Godkin, Karen Hoegy, Phyllis Mitchell, Helen Williamson, Kathleen Williamson. Monique Baan, Audrey Hackwell. Made Coutts, Mary Humphries, Brenda Linton, Viola Kirkby, Viola Travis and Helen Craig for volun- teering their time and talent to work on the quilt. Yvonne Kitchener and Jo-Ann McDonald got some quilting lessons. Pearl McCallum helped with set up. Next Saturday, Oct. 6 is• the Brussels Livestock 4-H Calf and Lamb Show and Sale. The show begins at 10 a.m. when the animals will be judged and the actual sale begins at 1 p.m. These kids will have all worked hard getting their animals ready for the fairs and now, the final sale. It is great to see the support of the 4-H members by parents, leaders and buyers at shows and sales such as this one. Call Bev Brown Piecing together history A group of volunteers at Duff's United Church in Walton have been working on a quilt, the pieces of which, found in British Columbia, bear the names of long ago Duff's members. From left: Marie Coutts, Marion Godkin, Monique Baan, Helen Williamson, Audrey Hackwell. (Bonnie Gropp photo) Quilters piece together Duff's history By Bonnie Gropp Citizen staff It began in 1998 with a charming letter addressed to the 'mayor' of Walton. "Is there a church in Walton named Duff's?" asked the writer. Mrs. Edna Glazier of Vancouver, B.C. had found some quilt blocks which had belonged to her grand- mother Janet Farquharson. Dated 1902 they bore the name Duff's United Church, Walton, and those of its members. The letter explained that Janet Farquharson had moved with her husband to Provost Alberta in 1908. She asked that if there is a Duff's, someone contact her about having the quilt completed. She felt that home base was where it belonged. Not only was the letter addressed to the mayor, but there was no postal code on the address. Yet, it made it to Walton, where it was placed in the mailbox of resident Barb Durrell, who directed it to the attention of the church's UCW. Member Leona McDonald, who has a son living out west, eventually made the trip to B.C. and after meet- ing with Mrs. Glazier, returned home with the 8x10-inch blocks, which bear the names of 80 people. Last week, the volunteer quitters nearly had the work complete. Though nothing has been finalized for the quilt's future, UCW members expect that it will hang in the church for six months to a year, then be moved for posterity to the Huron County Museum. The names included on the quilt are: Rev. A. McNab, Mrs. McNab, organist Annie Ferguson, Alex Gardner, Mrs. Gardner, Andrew Turnball, Mrs. Turnball, Johnathan Moore, Mrs. Moore, James Smillie, Mrs. Smillie, D. W. Smith, G. Gorst, J.
