(Advance Times photo) By Jim Brown Wingham Advance Times A young Blyth athlete received the Don (Boom) Gravett Memorial Bursary Award at the annual meeting of the Western Ontario Athletic Association last Monday evening. Tyler Stewart, 20,-son of Don and Linda Stewart, was presented the award by Don Gravett's widow, Mary, and son, Gary. The F. E. Madill Secondary School graduate is enrolled in the Human Resources and Police Foundations program at Fanshawe College in London. Upon completion of the course he hopes to attend Police College to eventually become an Ontario Provincial Police officer. Between 1986 and 2000 Stewart played minor hockey and softball in Blyth and has also umpired softball and coached minor hockey. He received letters of recommen- dation from Jeff Peters of Blyth, Const. Russ Nesbitt of the OPP, Steven Sparling of Sparling's Propane and from the Wingham ambulance service. According to the letter from Peters, Stewart has assisted at the local fall hockey school and worked well with both the leaders and the young children participating. The letter indicates Stewart dress- es appropriately as a coach, is punc- tual, runs a well-planned coaching program and has respect for the young players. • The letter from Nesbitt indicated Stewart was willing to help with any situation, performed any job request- ed of him proficiently and without complaint. Nesbitt willingly accept- ed Stewart's request to go on a ride- along during a working shift. Nesbitt said Stewart dealt with the public and was kind and pleasant to everyone he spoke with. Sparling indicated Stewart was a valued member of the company's summer crew for two years, retiring in April 2000 to work a summer at the family business. The summer crew at Sparling's consisted of hard working responsi- ble students and young adults. They work with minimum supervision and are encouraged to develop leadership and team skills. The letter from the Wingham Ambulance Service said Stewart has ambition and is a self-starter. He has the attitude, confidence and willing- ness to overcome any adversity, In accepting the bursary award, Stewart thanked the Gravett family and the WOAA.
