PhoneBusters warns of scams in wake of attack on U.S. PhoneBusters, the nationally-oper- ated call centre managed by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, has received several calls from citizens concerned about phone and internet solicitations requesting donations in regards to the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the United. States. There have been reports in the United States that some people may be involved in fradulently soliciting donations on the pretense that monies collected would go towards assisting the victims of the recent terrorist attack. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Economic Crime Branch and the Ontario Provincial Police Anti- Rackets have jointly declared that any persons or organizations in Canada that fraudulently attempt to derive profit from the recent terrorist attacks will be investigated with utmost vigor. Supt. Dave Jeggo, the officer in charge of the RCMP Economic Crime Program: "I find it difficult to believe that there are people out there willing to capitalize on the sig- nificant grief of another nation - dis- tasteful at the very least and the law enforcement community will take action to terminate these operations and bring offenders before the court. Detective Supt. William Crate, director of Ontario Provincial Police Anti-Rackets: "Criminal oppor- tunists preying on Canadians' desire to help the U.S. relief effort in the tragedy's aftermath are the lowest of the low." PhoneBusters advises that unless you have made the call or the con- tact, you have no way of knowing exactly who it is on the phone or internet. While many charitable causes are worthy of your support, some requests for donations may not be legitimate‘ Be cautious about chari- table organizations you do not know by experience or reputation. Ask questions about how your money will be used, where the char- ity operates, the -address and tele- phone number of the charity or the fundraising office, etc. Don't be pressured to make a donation. PhoneBusters stresses that if you wish to support victims of the recent terrorist attacks that you make con- tact with known charities, banks, and establishments.
