On Oct. II, i2 and 13 Brussels
and community-invites shoppers in
Huron County and beyond to dis..
cover beautiful gifts and home
decor handcrafted by skilled arti-
sans in 30 Third World countries.
Musical instruments, pottery, jew-
ellery, baskets, toys, creches and
loomed textiles are just a few of the
items featured.
The Brussels sale has been held
for the last 12 years, showcasing
handcrafted items marketed by Ten
Thousand Villages. Ten Thousand
Villages is a non-profit alternative
trading organization (ATO) and a
program of Mennonite Central
Committee (MCC).
Bev Brown, sales organizer, said
"For 55 years Ten Thousand
Villages has been working with tal-
ented artisans around the world pro-
viding them vital, fair income for
their beautifully handcrafted items.
By holding this sale we are giving
people in southwestern Ontario a
chance to help others feed, clothe
and educate themselves and their
families."
The sale is held at the Brussels
Mennonite Church at the north end
of the village, Thursday, Oct. 11, 10
a.m. to 9 p.n."; Friday, Oct. 12, 10
a.m: to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 13, 9
a.m. to 4 p.m.
A light lunch will be available on
Saturday.
This sale would not be possible
without the help of remarkable vol-
unteers, said Brown. "From unpack-
ing thousands of unique and beauti-
ful items to being a sales clerk, to
cleanup following the event, these
volunteers make it happen. With
their help this event has grown from
$3,000, in sales the first year to
$20,000 last year."
In 2000, sales throughout North
American retail stores and interna-
tional gift festivals has allowed Ten
Thousand Villages to purchase $5.9
Million worth of handicrafts from
artisans in 30 Third World countries.

Watch and wonder, watch and
wonder are the thoughts for the past
week. Words and reason are no good
as the horror of the September
tragedy becomes part of our every-
day news, and so all we can do is
watch and wonder.
The folks at Braemar Retirement
Centre in Wingham were celebrating
on Friday. Remember September
1991 when the 34 residents from
Callander Nursing Home joined the
35 folks from Brookhaven to
become Braemar with Mac and Tig
MacGowan at the helm. Ken Telfer,
Francis OKeefe and Ella Noble cele-
brated with lots of visitors as the
original inhabitants of the new
building.
Long-term staff were recognized
with mantel clocks and watches to
mark this occasion. Deb Trollope,
Carol Stevenson, Barb Albert, Jenny
Vercruyssen, Marion Morrison and
Betty Graber Watson were all part of
the staff who transferred to the new
facility.
A new walkway was also official-
ly opened and the generosity of the
community was celebrated. Bessie
Johnston in full dress uniform made
this 10th anniversary a special time.
There were several birthday par-
ties in the village this past week. It
seems the ones with zeroes involved
bring out the need to stop and con-
template the stage of or life. Or at
least the people we live with have a
need to let the world know that
another zero has been obtained.
Anyway there were parties to mark
the occasions and I hope each had a
very good time. Greetings to Donna,
Bob, Mary, Jean, Ralph and Davy.
The trees are letting us know it's
time to pack in, toss out, plan and
dream for the next season. Only you
can take time to appreciate your
everyday life and as you do, that
sense of wonder returns.
Bye now, Betty G. W.
