Buying co-op set up for fruits, vegetables
By David Emslie
Clinton News-Record
Many Huron County residents are
not getting enough fresh fruit and
vegetables in their diet, but the Good
Food Box hopes to help remedy this
problem.
The Good Food Box, explained
co-ordinator Joan van der Meer, is a'
collective group which purChases
wholesale fruit and vegetables for
distribution to its members.
"It runs like a large buying club
with centralized buying and co-ordi-
nation," she said.
The program first got started in
Toronto in 1994, and at that time, 40
boxes of fruit and vegetables were
distributed to those in the coopera-
tive once a month. "They are now up
to 4,000 boxes a month," van der
Meer said.
She explained that in Huron
County, the Good Food Box program
will work as follows: "Once a
month, individuals place orders with
volunteer co-ordinators in their com-
munity. Customers pay $12 ft r
standard box. Anyone can partici-
pate. Everyone pays. Each box con-
tains the same mixture of food,
though the contents change with
each delivery, depending on what is
in season and reasonable at the time.
Standard box contents and a pre-
order system make bulk-buying sav-
ings possible."
The co-ordinator stressed, "It's not

Margaret McMachon, president,
opened the meeting. Ruth Bauer was
secretary. Sharon Agla gave the trea-
surer's report.
The ACWW church service will be
held in Gorrie United Church April
28.
A resolutions or lobbying con-
venor is still needed for Huron East.
Also, an assistant secretary, educa-
tion co-ordinator and a PRO will be
needed for the slate of officers for
2002-2003.
The WI extend an invitation for the
50th anniversary of the Huron
County Women's Institute rally in
Fordwich Community Hall on
Monday, Oct.- 1. with the theme,
Time is a Precious Commodity. The
guest speaker will be Dawn Cleland
from the Rose program.
Each branch will donate a $5 gift
for the mystery auction.
The Guelph area convention will
be held in Maryhill on Oct. 24 and
Oct 25. Members are to bring voting
cards and participate in area happen-
ings.

fall fair
The villagers and farmers at Doon
Heritage Crossroads invite you to
take part in a 1914 Fall Fair on
Sunday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to
4:30 p.m.
Set in the autumn amidst the blaz-
ing colours and cool, crisp air, fall
fairs were an important event to the
rural community. It was the culmina-
tion of a year's worth of effort — the
best of the best was ready for corn-
, petition.

a food bank, it's not a charity - it is
making quality produce available to
everyone. The more people buy into
it, the better the box."
Clinton, because of -its central
location in the county, will be the
pilot site for the Huron Good Food
Box, and van der Meer saidThat once
the program gets up and running,
orders for a box will be taken the
first week of each month, and those
involved will be able to pick up their
goods during the third week.
A number of groups are involved
in the initiative and in getting the
funding for the project. Among those
involved are the Town and Country
Support Services, who have part-
nered with the Huron Good Food
Box by providing space and some
staff assistance.
According to van der Meer, staff at
the Betty Cardno Centre will assist
in taking order's for boxes, and the
centre will be the site where partici-
pants pick up their fruits and vegeta-
bles.
Delivery, at a nominal cost, will
also be made available for those who
can't make it to the centre to pick up
their goods.
One of the goals of the Huron
Good Food Box, she said; is to help
support the local economy by pur-
chasing Ontario produce whenever
possible. The program will also help
to educate participants about the
need to eat five to 10 servings of
fruits and vegetables a day.
Community Hall on Tuesday, May 7.
The theme will be In Frienship's
Circle Bright. Glenna Smith will be
the guest speaker. In memoriam will
be conducted by Lakelet. Floweri
and decorations will be by Howick
and registration and luncheon will be
looked after by Gorrie. Bluevale and
Walton branches will provide enter-
tainment.
Special guests are to be invited and
recognized. Each branch will bring
greetings and give a two-minute his-
tory of the branch.
The noon meal will be catered and
. tickets will be available at the
January district meeting.
The next district directors meeting
will be held on Jan. 28 at the home of
Marguerite Beirnes in Listowel at 10
"Most people, regardless of
income, are not consuming adequate
amounts of fresh fruits and. vegeta-
bles," van der Meer wrote in a
release.
"Professional evaluation of the
Good Food Box shows that partici-
pating in the program helps people
access a more nutritious diet. There
is mounting evidence that eating
enough fruit and vegetables is a key
to preventing disease."
Information will be shared along
with the fruits and vegetables, aS,the
co-ordinator noted, "A newsletter
that offers nutrition information, as
well as easy and economical food
preparation tips accompanies all of
the boxes."
The Huron County Health Unit
will be preparing the newsletter.
Apart from participants, to help
the program so that the boxes are all
that much better, volunteers will also
be needed. Although participants can
purchase without volunteering, van
der Meer stated, "We're hoping to
develop a good volunteer base in
Clinton."
Volunteers, she said, will be need-
ed to help unload the trucks that
deliver the fresh produce, and to help
pack the boxes.
For those interested in learning
more . about the program, a public
information meeting has been sched-
uled for Sept. 12 from 7-8:30 p.m. at
the Betty Cardno Centre on Huron
Road in Clinton.
