ation family affair but has a much
Idriger history as a business.
John Nixon took over the buginess,
in 1984. He operated a mixed farm
in the Belgrave area and had been a
director of West Wawanosh Mutual
since 1973.
When Mason Robinson,
Wawanosh Mutual's previous area
agent, retired, John took over the
business. Herston Irwin and Marvin
McDowell had operated the same
business previously.
The merger of the two businesses
also sees the transition from father to
son completed, as John Nixon has
retired and John Elliot has turned the
running of the company over to the
younger generation although he con-
tinues to work.
The older men's pride in their
businesses is evident with John
Nixon talking about being able to
help people on the weekends
because the business was in his
home and John Elliott saying that,
"We are very proud of the fact that
we have clients who have been with
us for three generations of the same
family."
The new generation is keenly
aware of their firm's joint history but
are looking to the future. They talk
about the advantages of having two
to handle the business and the
economies of scale that size can pro-
vide. Randy Nixon commented,
"The cost of good software is very
difficult for a small office to sup-
port." - • •
However, both Rick and Randy are
emphatic - about the fact that they
-don't want the new business to loose
the personal touch that was a hall-
mark of the old ones.

Two long-time area businesses
have joined forces. Elliott Insurance
of Blyth and Nixon Insurance of the
Belgrave/Brussels area have amalga-
mated to become Elliott Nixon
Insurance Brokers Inc. The new
company is to be run by Randy
Nixon and Rick Elliott who are the
second and the fourth generation of
their families, respectively, to be
involved in the insurance business.
Both companies have a long histo-
ry of service to area residents. Elliott
Insurance was established in 1910 by
John Elliott who relocated to this
area from Thessalon. Until 1934 he
operated The Myth Standard news-
paper as well as an insurance busi-
ness, all of which he had purchased
upon his arrival.
Gordon. John's youngest son,
joined him in the business in 1936.
The father and son tradition was con-
tinued when Gordon's oldest son, R.
John Elliott became involved. The
family tradition is being carried on
by a fourth generation as Rick
Elliott has formally taken over from
his father.
