40th Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion
Firefighters serve up breakfast each morning at hall
Food is a big part of the Thresher Reunion
experience. This year, as they have for nearly
a decade, Gary Courtney and his helpers will
be working hard to help provide one part of
that experience.
Courtney is in charge of the nightly corn-
roast. Actually, he steams the corn in the
unique thresher way and the recipe is not one
you should try at home.
First you need some rather unique cooking
utensils; a well-scrubbed 50 gallon drum with
a lid and a large steam engine will do nicely.
Attach one end of a steam line to a valve on
the engine and the other to a drum. Then take
30 dozen head of corn, still in their husks, and
pack it into this unusual pot. Now turn on the
steam and sit back and wait for 20 to 30 min-
utes.
" I try to get a different engine every day,"
said Courtney. "It gives the guys something to
do and they enjoy it."
From Thursday to Sunday this is what
Courtney will be doing for two hours every
evening. When he is finished 200 dozen cobs
of corn will have been eaten by over 1,000
people.
Other food will be available at several loca-
tions around the park. They are strategically
placed to make satisfying your hunger and
thirst very easy.
The Huron County Museum volunteers will
be stirring the bean pot as usual and they will
have some apple cider to wash it down.
The beans are started early in the morning
and they simmer over an open fire throughout
the day. As portions are ladelled out of the big
cast iron pot more beans are added to the brew.
Thursday night will see the minor hockey
association serving up a steak barbecue for
those who want something they can really get
their teeth into.
On Friday evening only, the Shriners' Fish
Fry will be held at Lions Park, beginning at 4
p.m.
For those looking for a sit-down meal, the
Legion Ladies Auxiliary will provide a soup
and sandwich lunch, upstairs at the auditori-
um, from 11:30 a.m. - 2-p.m. A full meal will
be laid on for supper from 4:00 p.m.- 7 p.m.
They will be providing the meals on Thursday
and Friday and the Blyth Lions Club will take
over on Sunday.
If you arrive early in the week both the
Blyth Anglican Church and the Auburn United
Church will be serving from Wednesday
evening on. Blyth Anglican offers bacon-on-a-
bun and Auburn United has a variety of sand-
wiches and pies.
East Wawanosh Public School will offer
beef-on-a-bun to their patrons.
The Town and Country Support Services
will be scooping out the ice cream to help
reunion goers stay cool.
If a light snack will do then Blyth United
Church is ready with coffee and muffins.
Those who can't sleep in will be able to get
their day off to a good start with a pancake
breakfast, including bacon or sausage, on
Friday and Saturday from 7:30 - 11 a.m. at the
Blyth Firehall.
Blyth Minor Sports and the Lions will be
providing pop, chips, hot dogs, burgers and
fries from Friday to Sunday.
A Moment in the Past
The John T. Hallahan Memorial Trophy
was presented each year for achieving the
fastest time for belt-setting with a steam
enginge and threshing machine. Hallahan
(1904-1984) was one of the original
founders of the Huron Pioneer Thresher
and Hobby Association. He farmed in the
Blyth area and in his younger years ran a
separator for Fred Platzer of Auburn.
