THE CITIZEN. WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 5. 2001. 40th Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion Hand built Massey-Harris an eye-catcher A thing of pride Ron Root's original hand-built Massey-Harris is an eye-catcher. It will be on display at this year's Reunion. By Mark Nonkes Special to The Citizen Ron Root's original hand-built Massey- Harris is sure to catch some eyes at the 40th Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion and Hobby Show. Root built the tractor as a surprise for his father-in-law who lives in Morris Twp and was having some trouble getting around. While Root was building the tractor he spent less time visiting his father-in-law, Aubrey McNichol, and spent all his free time work- ing on the tractor. McNichol started to get frustrated because he wasn't visiting enough, Root recalls. Everyone knew Root was building the trac- tor but had to keep their mouths shut for it to be a surprise. The tractor was a replica of a Massey that McNichol farmed with, but was completely made from scratch. The tractor itself was built on the frame of a riding lawn mower, with some parts sup- plied by Steve Radford and the tires by Townsend Tire from Londesboro. The trac- tor is painted a shiny Massey-Harris red. After about six months of work, Root pre- sented McNichol with the tractor. A few days after the tractor was complete- ly built, an American stopped in front • of Root's house on Morris Street in Blyth and offered to buy the tractor. Continued on A-15
