Brussels Livestock report
Calves, yearlings trade steady at Friday sale
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Aug.
31 were 2,903 head of cattle, 516
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday fed steers and heifers
sold at prices $1 to $2 lower. The
cows sold $2 to $5 lower. On
Thursday veal sold on a market
steady to last week while the lambs
sold sharply higher. On Friday all
calves and yearlings traded on a
steady market.
There were 413 steers on offer
selling from $107 to $110 with sales
to $124. Gilbert Janssen, Hanover,
consigned one blonde steer weighing
935 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers
for $124. His overall consignment of
three steers averaged 1,162 lbs. sell-
ing for an average of $109.26. One
RWF steer consigned by Fred and
Lynda HelWig, Neustadt, weighed
1,175 lbs. and sold to Dominion
Meats for $120. Their overall con-
signment of fourteen steers averaged
1,330 lbs. for an average of $109.06.
Urbshott Farms', Ilderton, con-
signed four steers averaging 1,385
lbs. selling to Moyer Packing Co. for
$110.85. Thirty-one steers consigned
by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, aver-
aged 1,375 lbs. selling for an average
of $108.11 with their top two limou-
sin steers averaging 1.408 lbs. sell-
ing for $111. K. C. McAlpine Farms,
Ailsa Craig, consigned eight steers
averaging 1,429 lbs. selling for an
average of $107.75 with sales up to
$110.
Twenty steers consigned by John
Van Nynatten, Mitchell, averaged
1,414 lbs. which sold for an average
price of $107.71 with sales up to
$108.60. Don Bailey, Elmwood,
consigned one charolais steer weigh-
ing 1,215 lbs. selling to Holly Park
Meat Packers for $112.25. His over-
all consignment of thirteen steers
averaged 1,379 lbs. selling for an
average of $107.70. Forty charolais
steers consigned by Clayton
Bearinger, Mount Forest, averaged
1,483 lbs. selling for an average of
$107.58 with sales to $109.50.
Schmidt Brook Farms,
Woodstock, consigned two limousin
steers which averaged 1;408 lbs.
selling to Dominion Meats for
$110.25. Their overall consignment
of eleven steers averaged 1,439 lbs.
for an average of $107.50. Nineteen
steers consigned by Howard Martin,
Brussels, averaged 1,459 lbs. and
sold for an average of $107.14 with
his top three simmental steers aver-
aging 1,423 lbs. selling to Dominion
Meats for $110.25.
There were 354 heifers on offer
selling from $107 to $110 with sales
to $122.25. Kada Farms, Bluevale,
consigned one black heifer weighing
1,315 lbs. which sold to Norwich
Packers for $122.25. Their overall
consignment of twenty-six heifers
averaged 1,302 lbs. selling for an
average of $109.49. One black heifer
consigned by Darren Johnston,
Bluevale, weighed 1,285 lbs. selling
to Holly Park Meat Packers for
$114.50. His overall consignment of
fourteen heifers averaged 1,218 lbs.
for an average of $108.62.
Dave Bender, Palmerston, con-
signed one limousin heifer weighing
1,250 lbs. which sold for $110.75.
Five heifers consigned by Merkley
Farms, Wroxeter, averaged 1,12.1
lbs. selling for an average price of
$109.74 with their top two limousin
heifers averaging 1,163 lbs. selling
for $113.25. Aaron and Jason
Coultes, Wingham, consigned ten
heifers averaging 1,239 lbs. selling
for an average of $108.78 with sales
to $109.75. One limousin heifer cqn-
signed by Walter McKenzie weighed
1,225 lbs. and sold to Moyer Packing
Co. for $108.25.
Glen M. Martin, Clifford, con-
signed ten black heifers averaging
1,212 lbs. selling for an average of
$107.87 with sales to $108.85. One
gold heifer consigned by Muxlea
Farms, Woodstock, weighed 1,200
lbs. selling for $111.50. Their overall
consignment of fourteen heifers
averaged 1,263 lbs. and sold for an
average of $107.75. Karl Terpstra,
Mitchell, consigned ten heifers aver-
aging 1,167 lbs. selling for an aver-
age of $106.16 with sales up to
$107.75. Fifteen heifers consigned
by Connell Farms, PalmerstOn, aver-
aged 1,183 lbs. for an average price
of $105.81 with their top limousin
heifer weighing 1,100 lbs. selling to
Highland Packers Ltd. for $109.25.
There were 186 cows on offer. D 1
and D2 cows sold. $68 to $78 with
sales to $96; D3, $63 to $68; D4, $53
to $63. Baerden Farms Inc.,
Goderich, consigned one holstein
cow weighing 1,105 lbs. selling for
$96. One charolais cow consigned
by Gayle Callan, Chatsworth,
weighed 1,200 lbs. and sold for
$85.50. Her overall consignment of
thirteen cows averaged 1,297 lbs. for
an average price of $75.82. Gilbert
Janssen, Woodstock, consigned one
holstein cow weighing 1,510 lbs.
selling to Packerland Packing Co.

There were 17 bulls on offer sell-
ing from $70 to $85.50 with sales to
$96.50. Scott McKellar, Alvinston,
consigned one Limousin bull weigh-
ing 2,220 lbs. which sold for $96.50.
One black bull consigned by Darryl
Gibson, Lucknow, weighed 1,830
lbs. and sold to Aylmer Meat Packers
for $87.50.
There were 149 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $105 to $157:
Holstein, $105 to $120; Plain
Holstein, $85 to $95. Mark and Paul
Pennington, Mildmay, consigned
one RWF veal heifer weighing 670
lbs. selling for $157. One black veal
steer consigned by Dennis
Thompson, Walkerton, weighed 680
lbs. and sold to Norval Meat Packers
for $157. Adam and Bert Renkema,
Londesboro, consigned one hereford
veal steer weighing 665 lbs. selling
for $131 and one gold veal steer
weighing 685 lbs. selling for $128.

Deadline nears for Young Speakers contest at Royal
The deadline for entering the
Young Speakers for Agriculture
(YSA) competition at the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair is looming.
Young Speakers for Agriculture is
a national opportunity for young
people, between the ages of 16 and
24, to present a prepared, five- to
seven-minute speech at the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair, held this
year on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Presentations are prepared dis-
cussing one of the following five
topics: Celebrating International
Year of the Volunteer, Farming - A
Way of Life or a Business?, Where
does our food come from?- Should
we care?, Environmental
Corn silage and hay-based rations
are offered at four BIO bull evalua-
tion consignment centres across the
province.
From Bob Dick's Douglas Bull
Centre in Renfrew County, to Doug
McNabb's Kenilworth Bull Centre
in North Wellington County, to Lyle
Aiken's Maple Dale Farms Bull
Center in Grey County to Brian
Pelleboer's, Lambton County Bull
Centre in Wyoming, all four centres
are now accepting applications for
the start of this falls' bull evaluation
season.
These consignment centres have
spaces available for 320 bulls and
have offered this roughage program
for,the past few years. The program
has gained favour among those pro-
ducers that- have evaluated bulls in
these local centres. These centres
targeted gain is 3.5 to3.7 lbs. per day
on an approved and balanced ration
made up primarily of corn silage and
hay.

Last year's competition featured
participants from Alberta, Manitoba,
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,
Ontario and Prince Edward Island.
The executive committee of the YSA
is optimistic that this year's competi-
tion will be shaping up to be every
bit as exciting.
The programme is jointly spon-
sored by Farm Credit Corporation
(FCC), Agriculture and Agri-Food
Canada (AAFC), the Eastern Canada
Farm Writers' Association
and offers clients another opportuni-
ty to develop their bulls.
There are additional private cen-
tres that also use a roughage ration
and they, also, have enjoyed contin-
ued success and satisfaction in
(ECFWA), the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food and Rural
Affairs (OMAFRA), and the Royal
Agricultural Winter Fair (RAWF).
"The. ECFWA is committed to
improving communications ill agri-
culture," said Andrew Douglas.

cultural communicators."
