.Over the past weekend the
Brussels Mites competed in the Tri-
County year-end tournament in
Benmiller. They capped a very suc-
cessful season by capturing the A
championship.
In their first game the Mites faced
the top team from the South
Division, Stanley Twp. After a ScOre-
less first inning the Brussels bats
went to work scoring seven in the
second inning. Stanley Twp. coun-
tered with a single in their half of the -
inning to give the Mites a 7-1 lead.
A two-run homer by Brendan
Stretton in the third upped Brussels'
lead to 9-1.
The Mites' bats, continued to be
strong as they scored three more runs
in the fourth and six runs in the fifth.
Brianne Wheeler pitched four strong
innings allowing only three runs
while striking out seven batters.
Stretton pitched the final inning
allowing one run to make the final
score 18-4 for Brussels.
In their second game the Mites
faced Belmore, a team which has
played them tough all year. Brussels
opened up a 1-0 lead into the first
inning with Ben Gowing scoring the
run. Belmore scored two runs in the
top of the second inning to take the
lead. Brandon McGavin and Ryan
Smith scored in the bottom of the
inning to restore Brussels' one-run
lead.
In the third Stretton and Wheeler
scored, to up the lead to 5-2.
After Belmore scored a solo run in
the. top of the fourth, Brussels coun-
tered with seven runs to up the lead
to 12-3. Joel Wilkinson and Westin
McLeod both hit RBI doubles during
the inning.
In the fifth Stretton took over
pitching but control problems
allowed Belmore to get-back into the
game. Wheeler re-entered the game
to stop the Belmore rally and give
Brussels a 12-11 victory. During the
game Wheeler allowed three runs
while striking out 13 batters.
This victory moved Brussels into
the "A" final against Colborne Twp.
After holding Colborne scoreless in
the first, the Mites countered with
seven runs to take the lead. Brussels
added one more in the second inning
and seven in the third to take a 15-0
lead. The big hit in the third was a
bases-loaded triple by Brad
Quesenberry.
During her three innings of pitch-
ing Wheeler didn't allow a run while
striking out eight Colborne batters.
Stretton pitched the fourth inning
allowing one run, Melinda Dorsch.
pitched the final inning allowing
three runs to make the final score 16-
4.
The victory gave the Brussels team
the "A" Championship.
The three victories in the tourna-
ment gave the Mites an undefeated
season with a record of 16 wins and
no losses. Besides strong pitching
and hitting, the team displayed good
fielding skills. Throughout the year
the team received strong catching
from Gowing, McGavin, and Evan
Ducharme. The infielders included
Cody Subject, Dorsch, Andrew
Lindsay, Smith, Stretton,
Quesenberry and Wilkinson. Good
outfieltling was supplied by
McLeod, Justin Pipe, Jason Bowman
and Robert Cronin.
The championship was very
rewarding since many of the players
missed ball last year or were playing
their first_year of organized ball. The
team should be congratulated on a
great season, said their coaches.
Tigers enjoy
six-run
inning
The Brussels Tigers used a six-run
second inning and strong defence to
defeat the Lieury Jets 6-2 at home in
Huron County Fastball League
action on Friday night. ,
The visitors- hit the score sheet
first with a run in the top of the first.
The home side then exploded in the
bottom of the second for all six of
their runs. The big blow was a three-
run homerun by Tiger second base-
man Mark Pennington. The scoring
was capped by some daring base
running by Moe Pipe as he scored all
the way from second on an infield
chopper in front to home plate.
Doug Conley went the distance,for
the home side fanning seven Jets.
Terry Nichol and Doug Shaw each
had three hits for the Tigers.
Next action for the Tigers is
Friday night as they tangle with the
Goderich Gardiners in a big four-
point game for both teams.
PUBLIC INFORMATION
MEETING
CONCERNING A PROPOSED WIND
TURBINE FACILITY IN THE TOWNSHIP
OF ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH
The Council of the Corporation of the Township of Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh will hold a public information meeting on
Monday, August 27, 2001 at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of St.
Joseph's Catholic Church at Kingsbridge (Hwy. 21) to provide
information on a proposed wind turbine in the Ashfield Ward of
the municipality.
A private company is proposing to construct a wind turbine to
generate electricity on the south part of Lot 1, Concession 3 E.D.
(approximately 1 km east of Port Albert), Ashfield Ward in the
Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh. The wind turbine
would provide renewable ("green") energy for the electricity
market when new producers of electricity are permitted to enter
the market as planned for 2002. The total height of the proposed
structure is 88.5 metres. This height includes a 65 metre tower
with a 3-blade rotor (similar to a propeller) with a diameter of 47
metres. A similar structure is located at the Bruce Nuclear Power
Development at Tiverton.
The Zoning By-law for the municipality permits electric power
facilities in any land use zone. The subject property is zoned as
General Agriculture (AG1). Regulations under the Ontario
Environmental Assessment Act do not require an environmental
assessment for projects smaller than 2 Megawatts (Category A).
The proposed wind turbine is- smaller than 2 Megawatts.
However, anyone can request that the Minister of the
Environment make a Category A project subject to the
Evironmental Assessment Act.
The meeting will give the proponent an opportunity to provide
information on the proposed wind turbine and will allow the
public to provide comments to the municipality which will be
considered in processing the building permit application. The
meeting is for information and commenting purposes only, and
is not a required meeting under the Planning Act.
Additional information relating to the proposed wind turbine is
available for inspection during regular office hours at the
Township Clerk's office.
