Early shoppers
It was garage sale day in Cranbrook last Saturday and
shoppers were up early to catch all the bargains. (Vicky Bremner

I think we are all thankful for the
rain that fell last week. It certainly
greened our lawns.
It is either feast or famine here in
Cranbrook. This weekend there were
three events all on Saturday. We had
the annual Cranbrook garage and
lawn sale day. Some eight families
participated. It was supposed to start
at 8 a.m. but the people started arriv-
ing well before that time.
Then there was a large party
organized by Janet Engel which was
attended by many friends and family
members. I heard that it was given
also to herald a milestone birthday
abcut which we are not going to
speak. Janet had boOked the
Cranbrook Community Hall in case
of rain but the party stayed outside
because the weather was perfect.
The same evening yet another
party was going strong as the Wiens'
had their annual beef roast. It was
attended by friends, neighbours and
family mernbers as well. Just in case
of rain the Wiens had put up a large
Pent, but here again the weather was
very good and the tent was decora-
tion rather than shelter.
Cranbrook looked like Toronto
with all the cars parked all over! I
cduld have been rich if I . had pre-
sented myself as a "meter-police"
and charged for parking. I shall con-
sider that for next year.
The Miniellys went to a sport
show and Davis and Micheala did
inside rock climbing. (By the way I
must apologize for the misprint in
last week's Cranbrook News when
for her birthday Micheala was billed
as "Michael" instead of Micheala).
The girls found the rock climbing
fun to do but extremely tiring on
arms and hands. They had to quit
mid-way and were "res4ed". Good
try though.
Happy birthday wishes go to
Spencer Birch, one of our two mil-
lennium babies in Cranbrook who
will be one year old. soon. Kyra
Mason, the other baby, will be one
year old in September: The two of
them appeared on the social circuit
at the various parties around town
and spent a lot of time together.
I had a small "party" of my own on
Friday night. Hendrik, my pony-
sized Bernese Mountain Dog puppy
got into an encounter with a skunk at
the back fence. This had to happen
at 1 a.m. after which he sought
refuge on my bed. He did not under-
stand why all of a sudden he was not
treated as "cute and lovable", but
had to be doused in vinegar and
water. As you can imagine I did not
explain it to him, just soaked him.

Group taken to see `Akim'
Continued from page 6
They were taken to the Akim's
office. Yoon felt she must have been
influential as he observed everyone
bowing when they appeared before
her.
She- sat at a desk with her law
books and those appearing before
her sat in a row of chairs facing the
desk. Along one side wall was a table
behind which were two police offi-
cers, a Moslem cleric and another
official in plain clothes. •
The same questions were asked
Concerning the reasons for their visit
and the state of their visas. At this
point however, Yoon was asked to
explain the backpack of drugs and
medicines he had brought along to
give to the poor who couldn't afford
local medical care. He felt that they
were unused to seeing that much
medicine at one time.
The backpack was emptied onto
the desk and closely examined. The
Akim appeared to think that so many
drugs must contain something ille-
gal.
After an argument with Yoon, the
Akim agreed to call in medical per-
sonel to examine the contents of the
backpack. Two doctors and two
pharmacists arrived and examined
everything in great detail, eventual-
ly declaring it Co be ordinary medi-
cine.
Refusing to give up their quest to
expel the party from the city, the
local authorities then took the team
leader to the police station. Here he
was, interrogated further and his
answers compared to Yoon's at the
Akim's court.
The whole group was eventually
allowed to leave believing that they
had permission to stay in the city.
Unfortunately, the matter was appar-
ently referred to someone higher in
the government. At midnight, that
night, the party was confronted at
their rented house by several police
officers who demanded they leave
immediately. Eventually an appeal
was allowed the next day.
Although Yoon returned to the
town hall, with the interpreter, all he
could learn was that someone 'higher
up' had said they must leave.
When he pointed out they had no
tickets the police said they would be
provided. -When they arrived at the
train station, in the afternoon, the
.police went to the ticket issuer and
cancelled sufficient reservations to
put the missionary team on the train
to Chilik, near Almaty, which is the
field mission headquarters.
For the next several days the team
went out -each day to conduct their
missionary work and Yoon was able
to use his medicines to help those
who needed them.
They would go to small towns and
villages, between Almaty and Chilik,
along what used to be known as the
Silk Road from China and talk to the
inhabitants about why they were
there, their culture and beliefs.
Regardless of the problems Yoon
said he thought the mission was a
success. "The people are good, not
malicious or aggressive." he said,
adding that he felt some were ready
to respond to the message the mis-
sionary team was bringing.
"Here we sometimes don't feel
God. There we did." YoOn said. "I
felt that God answered our prayers
for his work immediately."
