Six easy steps to follow towards a healthier home

Our -homes might not be the safe
havens we think they are. In fact,
research indicates that the air indoors
can be significantly more polluted
than outdoor air and that exposure to
these indoor air pollutants can
significantly affect health.
Children's health, in particular, is at
risk.
Poor indoor air quality in the home
results from biological contaminants
that are a common outcome of
excessive humidity levels, water
damage and pets and chemical
contaminants that are introduced in
the products we use every day to
furnish, clean, renovate and maintain
our homes. These pollutants, once
released into the air, can accumulate
in our bodies through inhalation and
skin absorption. Exposure to
biological pollutants is being
implicated as a factor in soaring
asthma rates for both adults and
children and indoor air pollution in
general is linked to the significant
rise in the rate of childhood illnesses
such as allergies, asthma, learning
disabilities, and even cancer.
While there may not yet be
definitive proof that our homes can
Let Your Light Shine was the
theme of 4-H Members' Conference
attended. by 56 13-and 14-year-olds
from eight Southwestern Ontario
counties.
The two-day conference, held last
month at the Pierce-Williams Centre
in Fingal, taught the participants
teambuilding and leadership skills in
a fun environment.
When asked why 4-H members
should attend the conference,
be affecting our health, creating a
healthier home environment is not
only prudent but is easy to do. You
can greatly improve the quality of
the air inside your home by taking
these few easy to implement steps.
1. Replace cleaning products --
Today many healthier alternative
and highly effective cleaning
products are made without
synthetic and chemical compounds.
Check out the ingredients and
warning labels on some of the
products under your sink or in your
laundry room. Consider replacing
these "super strength" chemical
products with less toxic alternatives
to improve the health of your home.
2. Ventilate — Homes today are very
tightly sealed which means that not
enough fresh air may be entering
your home. Mechanical ventilation
systems such as heat recovery or
energy ventilators are an excellent
way to efficiently bring fresh air
into the home.
Opening windows when outdoor
conditions are ideal is a low cost
and simple way to improve stale air
and bring in fresh air.
3. Not pesticide policy — As
Melanie Marriott, Perth, said, "They
should go, because it's fun and you
meet new people." Lindsey Rundle,
Perth, said, "Go to the conference
because you will learn a lot about
leadership and teamwork."
Attending the conference were

evidence of the health and
environmental effects of pesticides
mounts, it makes good common
sense not to use chemicals on your
lawn. The effects of pesticides are
not limited to the targeted pest but
are quite widespread; they can even
be tracked into the home where
they take many years to
biodegrade.
Check out your local
environmental group for tips on
healthier lawn care practices.
4. Renovate responsibly — Many
products used in home construction
and renovations contain chemicals
that can severely impair indoors air
quality. Paints, adhesives, stains
and varnishes may release solvents
that will linger indoors, especially
if ventilation is inadequate.
Consider renovating in spring or
early fall when humidity levels will
not affect drying times and when
you can achieve maximum
ventilation. Choose your
renovation products carefully and
look for premium quality, low
odour and chemically reduced
renovation and construction
products.
Three Members' Conferences are
being held this summer, with the
other two scheduled for the Blue
Springs Centre, Acton and
Providence Point, Lanark.
As an informal educational
program, 4-H helps young people,
10 to 21 years of age, to develop
personal skills while learning about
a topic of interest to them.
Almost 8,000 members and 2,000
volunteers took part in over 1,200
5. Control humidity — Excessive
moisture in the house creates an
ideal environment for such
biological contaminants as dust
mites and moulds. Monitor
humidity levels with a hygrometer.
Ideal humidity is somewhere
between 35 - 45 per cent. If you
have humidity over 50 per cent
then you may need to use a
dehumidifier.
Exhaust fans should ideally be used
in bathrooms, laundry rooms and
kitchens to help manage excess
moisture from everyday activities.
6. Regular maintenance —
Understanding the mechanical
systems in your home such as your
furnace and air conditioner is an
important part of home health.
Furnaces should be inspected
annually by a qualified technician.
Furnace filters should be 'changed
on a regular basis and furnace
humidifiers or air cleaners should
be maintained according to
manufacturer instructions, Ensure
that you have carbon monoxide
detectors placed on every level of
your home and that your smoke
detectors are working properly.
