St. PauIs won the game, 5-3, and went on to the A championship finals where they were defeated by K-W Pride in a close game that went into extra innings, closing with a score of 6- 5. PAGE 9. U-9 soccer season ends with match against Elma The Brussels I U-9 soccer squad ended their regular season with a match against Elma I, July 30. The low scoring game was domi- nated by Ty Sebastian and Randy Zwep as they accounted for the only two goals of the game. Sebastian scored early after Zwep worked the ball into position on the left side to beat the netminder. Andrew Lindsay and Christopher Becker were strong on defense, with Lindsay stopping the attackers at centre and Becker pushing off the opponents when they got to close to the net. Christine Bone showed good hustle in chasing down the ball. The team played their first play- off game in Brussels against Howick, Aug. 6. Having placed fifth in a division of 22 teams, Howick was a tough opponent, scoring three quick goal early. Cam Schlosser was solid in net, preventing many more scores by Howick. Bowers tried to pull Brussels to within two, but his shot trickled wide. Lindsay broke the shutout before the end of the first half, scor- ing from the far right side. Vicki Blake displayed her strong kicking skills.and Sebastian hustled to stay in the action. Sebastian moved between the posts for the second half and was beat when a Howick player scored PEOPLE AROUND CRANBROOK By Peter Hagedoorn Call 887-6935 Linda Minielly's father Joel Chapelle and her girlfriend Ruth Richardson from Jackson's Point visited on Tuesday, July 31. Joel who is 80 went on a motorcycle ride with his grandson Richard. Joel said he had not been on a bike for 60 years and enjoyed the experience very much. Happy belated birthdays to Leanne and Richard, and to Michael who turned seven on Saturday. The potluck supper held in the Cranbrook Community Hall for Jack and Donna Knight who have moved away from Cranbrook to Brussels was well attended by family and friends in the community. It was a very pleasant occasion and the food on a deflection off him. Down 6-1, Brussels scored one last time before the final whistle. Tournament play continued on Aug. 11 in Wallace with Brussels meeting Drayton 2 in the morning. The evenly-matched teams both played very well with end-to-end action. The lone goal of the first half came from Bowers. Drayton evened the tally in the second half, beating netminder Zwep after he had stopped several shots in close. Nice passing from Sebastian to Bowers pulled Brussels back into the lead before Sebastian netted one of his own. Lindsay and Becker were strong on defense, keeping the oppo- was delicious. Ten years ago on Aug. 10, Sheila and Tony Terpstra tied the knot and they were celebrating that fact last Saturday, Aug. 11 at "The Pond" opposite Charlie and Catherine Terpstra's Place just outside Brussels. A lot of people, family and friends, attended and many of them were neighbours from Cranbrook. Trevor and Kerri Jacklin with their children Shilea and Abbey who used nents shots to a minimum. Working the ball well in the mid-field were Emily Baker, Emily Prior and Emily Kerkhof while Cassidy Peachey, Adrian Menzi and Marissa Pipe jos- tled for the ball along the sidelines. Brussels earned the 3-1 win. The next challenger was Listowel 4, a team with considerable size and speed. They scored three goals in the first half then shut out Brussels for the remainder of the game. Bowers, Peachey and Sebastian had near misses on the few shots allowed on the Listowel netminder. Megan Miners wdrked hard to slow the play. It was the end to a good season coached by Murray Bone and Steve Bowers. to live in Cranbrook some years ago came over from Belleville for-,the • occasion. Heather (who was one of the maids of honour) and husband Brian Kelso travelled from Kirkton to attend. It was a very happy party. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Gillis celebrat- ed their golden wedding anniversary on Aug. 6. A family gathering was held in honour of the golden couple at the house of John and Pat Gillis on Aug. 5. Harry and Mildred have resided in Brussels and Grey Twp. since their marriage.
