THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15, 2001. Sports Squirts down Goderich Twp. Playing the game It was low fives for these players while the opposition seems a little less sure, when two teams took to the field in this game Saturday during an annual Blyth slowpitch tournament. (Vicky Bremner photo) Blyth girls finish Huron swim The Brussels Squirts had a tough game against Goderich Twp. B on Monday, July 30, but came from behind in the last inning to win 28- 24. With Cheryl Cox and Evan Wilkinson sharing an inning of pitching and David Petrick throwing for three, the game was close for the first three innings. Andrew Baker caught all three pitchers and tagged a few opposing runners at homeplate. Brussels showed great hitting by Bridget Blake, Ashley Sholdice, Meagan Keifer, Ryan Jutzi, Zack Hoegy and Alyssa Gowing. John Bentley put a exclamation point on the fourth inning with a huge home- run. The team continued to cut down on errors and improve on their base stealing with Wade Stephenson demonstrating his running skills by stealing home in the third. The Brussels Squirts next home game is Aug. 20 at 7 p.m., then on Aug. 25 they will travel to Varna for the playoff tournament. By Mark Nonkes Citizen staff Two young Blyth girls have accomplished more than what many will ever, when they swam across Lake Huron with the Huron Hurricanes on the August long week- end. Ten-year-old Jessica Sparling and Megan Lee, 15, both of Blyth swam as part of a relay team of 20 from Harbour Beach, Michigan on Saturday, Aug. 4 to the main beach in Goderich, on Sunday, Aug. 5. They endured waves and cold tem- peratures as they swam at different times over 27 hours on Saturday, through the night and Sunday. "It got colder as we got to Canada," Lee said. Sparling and another young swim- mer started off the relay at the Michigan beach against one-metre high waves that lasted for over six hours. "It got close to being not a go because of the weather," said organ- izer Rick Kloss to The Goderich Signal-Star. However, the hot 33° weather and full moon were excellent conditions for the swim, Kloss said. As the team came into the final stretch before the Goderich beach, all swimmers jumped into the water and swam the last leg. Lee was one of the first to exit the water in Goderich on Sunday. "I was exhausted," Lee said. The group has joined swimmer Vicki Keith, who swam the lake 13 years ago, and Kloss's father, who crossed the lake 10 year ago, into the history books. The swim is something the two will always" remember and some- thing few will ever be able to do . PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING CONCERNING A PROPOSED WIND TURBINE FACILITY IN THE TOWNSHIP OF ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH The Council of the Corporation of the Township of Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh will hold a public information meeting on Monday, August 27, -2001 at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Kingsbridge (Hwy. 21) to provide information on a proposed wind turbine in the Ashfield Ward of the municipality. A private company is proposing to construct a wind turbine to generate electricity on the south part of Lot 1, Concession 3 E.D. (approximately 1 km east of Port Albert), Ashfield Ward in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh. The wind turbine would provide renewable ("green") energy for the electricity market when new producers of electricity are permitted to enter the market as planned for 2002. The total height of the proposed structure is 88.5 metres. This height includes a 65 metre tower with a 3-blade rotor (similar to a propeller) with a diameter of 47 metres. A similar structure is located at the Bruce Nuclear Power Development at Tiverton. The Zoning By-law for the municipality permits electric power facilities in any land use zone. The subject property is zoned as General Agriculture (AG1). Regulations under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act do not require an environmental assessment for projects smaller than 2 Megawatts (Category A). The proposed wind turbine is smaller than 2 Megawatts. However, anyone can request that the Minister of the Environment make a Category A project subject to the Evironmental Assessment Act. The meeting will give the proponent an opportunity to provide information on the proposed wind turbine and will allow the public to provide comments to the municipality which will be considered in processing the building permit application. The meeting is for information and commenting purposes only, and is not a required meeting under the Planning Act. Additional information relating to the proposed wind turbine is available for inspection during regular office hours at the Township Clerk's office.
