It's fitting that a play all about
memory, such as is the case with the
Blyth Festival's most recent show,
Corner Green, will not soon be for-
gotten. •
With a story unlike anything else,
Canadian icon Gordon Pinsent's
story about an elderly man and his
demon, the Hagge, is wonderfully
and skillfully acted by the husband
and wife team of Michael and Susan
Hogan.
In Newfoundland culture the
Hagge is known as a creature that
plagues people in the night. The vin-
dictive 'creature rides her victims,
playing on the would have, could
have, should have.
In Pinsent's work, the Hagge
(Susan Hogan) is a vendicive and
cruel creature that terrorizes an eld-
erly gentleman's memory (Michael
Hogan). She controls Garland's
mind and actions trying to drive him
to the edge.
The bitter Garland is fighting to

Aug. 4 marks the first Annual
Blyth Festival Singles' Night.
Single people young and old arc
encouraged to come out and mix
and mingle, and take in a perform-
ance of The Passion of Narcisse
Mondoux, the romantic comedy
starring Ted Johns and Mary Long.
The evening gets rolling at 6:30
p.m. in the lower hall where mem-
bers of the cast are being put up for
"sale." Audience members will have
the opportunity to bid in a silent
auction for the chance to enjoy the 8
p.m. performance with one of this
year's cast, crew or directors.
One lucky audience member will
win the chance to enjoy an evening
with Will Donnelly! Eric Coates,
who played Will Donnelly in this
year's spectacular The Outdoor
Donnellys, and is the associate artis-
tic director, is even throwing in a
lunch date.
After the performance, a recep-
tion is being held with lots of good
food, great music, and most of all,
lots of fun with cast and crew from
the 2001 Blyth Festival Company.

retain his memory of an old love
who disappeared. Through a series
of flashback scenes, we meet Ray, a
man who lives like he is still in the
war, and Mina, the sweet and gentle
love interest, both crucial to the
story.
As Mina, Kate Hemblem is spell-
binding and instantly likeable.
Hogan tranforms himself from a
grumpy and worn-out old man to a
young and enthusiastic man in the
blink of an eye. Susan Hogan is
utterly unsettling as the Hagge.
Everything this creature does is
absolutely frightening as she mental-
ly tortures Garland.
Both of the Hogans are accom-
plished actors. Both have starred in
TV series and movies such as Cold
Squad and Night Heat.
However, as I was leaving one eld-
erly women commented, "I'm going
to need an interpreter for that one,"
she said.
Indeed there is confusion with the
conclusion of the play. The play has
a gentle pace until the last 10 min-
utes when things happen quickly and

leave an ending open to interpreta-
tion and some perplexed audience
members.
With a minimal set, the stage is
laid out with a bed and three riser
levels but brings the essence of
Newfoundland and allows 'for some
wonderful lighting, as lights shine
through floorboards and colours
explode in the distance when a fire-
work cracks.
Directed by Diana Belshaw, the
show needs a second viewing to
catch some of the things missed the
first time. But with first rate acting
in the show a second viewing would
be a delight.
