Man's prized racing pigeons shot on way home
It was a disturbing discovery for
Paul Finch recently when he found
that one of his prized homing
pigeons had been shot.
Worse yet, he had to assume that
the same fate had been met by about
42 others as they have never
returned. The birds quite simply
always come home, said Finch.
"They could hit_ a wire or some-
thing, but not all of them. And the
fact that there were pellets gives me
the evidence I need to assume
they've been shot."
Finch said he is not the only one to
suffer losses. Several area men who
raise racing pigeons as a hobby also
had a number of birds not return.
The place where the problem is
occuring, Finch said, is somewhere
between Brussels and Listowel.
Noting that not one of his birds
would be valued at less than $50,
Finch points out that the majority are
worth considerably more. Some of
the ones .that didn't make the trip
home are the offspring of two club
winners.
"They would be worth about
$200-$300 apiece," said Finch. "You
can see- why I'm upset. It's quite a
loss."
It has also cost him in time as well,
as the new ones he has received to
replace them will miss three races
before they are ready to leave the
nest so to speak.
Assuming that someone believes
they are shooting barn pigeons,
Finch suggests they take a closer
look. "These pigeons fly in flocks
and they are sleeker, with longer
necks."
"If you want to shoot birds go to
the barn."
Injured
Paul Finch of Walton shows the wound sustained by one of
his prized racing pigeons. Less than half of his birds
returned home from a recent race. The remainder he
believes have been shot.
Collision
On July 21 in the early afternoon, two vehicles collided at the intersection of Cardiff Road and
McNabb Line in Grey. Lori Bentley, 33 of Grey was travelling north with five passengers.
According to police she entered the intersection. and struck another car, which went off the road
into a fence, then struck a tree. The driver, Annette Neville, 45 of Grey had one passenger with
her, three-year-old Justin Neville. All eight were taken to hospital by ambulance. Bentley,
Merissa LeFor, seven, Jenelle Smith, seven and Annette Neville were treated for minimal
injuries. Justin Neville, Jessica Bentley, seven and Patty Blake, six sustained minor injuries
while Colleen Edgar, seven received a serious injury. Bentley has been charged with failing to
yield. (Vicky Bremner photo)
