A friend asked recently if I had any
Christmas wrapping paper. This is a
person who seems pretty organized
(I have my suspicions that she does
some of her Christmas shopping at
the Boxing Day sales) 'but that
request had me nonplussed for a
moment. Christmas is six months
away! I want to luxuriate in the
warmth and blessings of summer. It
is much too early to think about
Christmas.
We probably should, however.
Because, after it was explained to me
that this family celebrated Christmas
in July as a family get together that
would not be possible in December,
I began to realize that it was a good
idea to set aside time, each month -
to celebrate Christmas.
I do not mean the gifts and glitter
but THE GIFT. We should take time
to reflect that we have been given
freedom to be the Children of God,
by God, in a country that allows
freedom. This is not an accident but
.the result of those who felt that these

So how did people communicate
and get in touch with one another at
the turn of the century? How did
they know what was going on?
On Sunday, July 22, Doon
Heritage Crossroads will help you
answer some of these questions.
Ninety years ago, e-mail, televi-

Radio was in its infancy and the
telephone was considered a novelty
in a small rural village.

some of these questions.

freedoms were vital to our well
being and were prepared to fight, if
necessary, to keep them.
Too often the seemingly ordinary
everyday things get ignored and it is
only when they are threatened that
we begin to pay attention. How
much better would we be if we con-
sciously took time to review what we
have, what we want for ourselves
and our children and if we find that
this has been eroded through indif-
ference, neglect or malfeasance to
then go back to first principles? God
created our world to be .a good one
and, as the poster says GOD DOES
NOT MAKE JUNK.
And in God's creation we know,
daily, God's care. This care is evi-
dent in many ways and always is
rooted in the love of God that sent us
Jesus as Saviour and Redeemer. That
was an "awesome" thing and we
should give thanks, daily for the gift
of God.
This gift is not a transitory thing
but forever.
We are told "In the beginning was
the Word and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. He was
with God in the beginning. Through
him all things were made: without
him nothing was made that has been
made. In him was life and that life
was the light of humanity." John 1:1-
4
We have light for our way, we
never have to fear the dark. We have
so much to celebrate and so, when
we give our thanks it will be
Christmas every day.
No longer will we compartmental-
ize our lives or think that only
December is the Christmas month.
We will, give thanks that every
month is special to us and we will
CELEBRATE that fact.
Merry Christmas!
