PAGE 12. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001.
Summer is finally here, the kids
are out of school, but this year they
have to wait for a phone call. The
Easter Seal Society has been work-
ing hard at their annual Send a Kid to
Camp Campaign, which helps send
children with physical disabilities to
camp.
Summer is already here and camp
started on July 1! Many kids are still
waiting to hear if they will be able to
attend camp this summer. They may
not be able to without your help.
There is a great need for donations or
many children with physical disabil-
ities will miss the experience to
attend a special Easter Seals camp,
such as Woodeden in London. A
donation will go directly to help send
Mr. and Mrs. Tibor Oravec and
Kristen of Akron, Ohio visited
Mabel Wheeler.
Visitors at the home of Betty Irwin
were Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Irwin of
Humboldt, Sask. who spent a few
days. Mr. and Mrs. Brad Irwin and
daughters of Toronto visited on the
weekend. Colleen Irwin of Port
Carling, Lorna Ryder and Thomas
and Sean Glober of Barrie were
overnight guests.
Nicholas Irwin of Kitchener spent
part of his summer holidays. Chesley
Irwin of Edmonton visited for
two weeks with her grandmother,
Betty Irwin as well as other Irwin
relatives.
Congratulations is extended from
the community to Jeff and Michelle
Nesbitt on the birth of their daughter,
Kaila Ann born June 22 at Clinton
• Public Hospital.
Sincere sympathy is extended
from the community to Helen
Stonehouse in the loss of her brother,
Harvey Edgar. May your thoughts
and prayers be with Helen in her
time of sorrow.
The community extends sincere
sympathy to Ethel Miner Clare and
Sanford Clare in the loss of Ethel's
father. May you remember Ethel and
Sanford in your prayers.
Little Kendall Jardin, daughter of
Mike and Debbie, celebrated her sec-
ond birthday on Saturday, July 7. In
her honour a party was held at their
home. Many friends, neighbours and
relatives attended the- happy occa-
sion including grandparents Steve
a child to camp from your local area.
"The cost of having a child with a
physical disability can be anywhere
from $10,000 to $40,000 a year,"
said Charlotte Gibson, president and
CEO of the Easter Seal Society.
Most parents cannot afford to send
their child to camp on top of these
other costs.
Because of the special care need-
ed, it costs $1,300 for a child with
physical disabilities to attend camp
for just one week.
Without the help of local business-
es and community support, many
will miss the crackling fire, swim-
ming, canoeing and the chance to
make new friends. The Easter Seal
Society is asking that donors to help
and Marilyn Fogal, Wingham;
Harold and Nancy Jardin, Beigrave
and great-grandparents Clare and
Gladys Van Camp, Brussels and Tom
and Ruth Jardin of Blyth.
A delicious barbecued meal was
served and a Barney birthday cake
make new friends. The Easter Seal
Society is asking that donors help
make camp a reality for children
with physical disabilities in your
area.
Easter Seals is dedicated to help-
ing children, youth and young adults
with physical disabilities achieve
their full individual potential and
future independence. With your
help, the Easter Seal Society funds
disability solutions through financial
assistance summer camp, research,
advocacy, public and consumer edu-
cation.

Kid to Camp package, contact: Leela

and ice cream were shared by all.
After the meal the children took
turns to break a butterfly-shaped
pinata filled with treats. Best wishes
Kendall on your special. day.
Birthday greetings are also extended
from the community.
By Rev. Ethel Miner Clare
Belgrave United Church
Recently, while on vacation, I
worshipped in ,a church in St. John's
Newfoundland. On that particular
Sunday, the minister told the chil-
dren a story that comes from Harold
Kushner's When - Bad Things
Happen to Good People.
It went something like this:
One morning, just as eight-year-
old John was finishing his breakfast,
his mother asked if he would go to
the store to get a dozen eggs and
some milk for her. John liked going
to the store for his mother so he
quickly agreed do this errand. He ate
his last piece of toast and was soon
on his way.
Mother tidied the kitchen and did
the breakfast dishes. As she dried the
last plate she wondered what was
keeping John. "He should be back by
now," she thought.
She went to the window several
times and was becoming quite wor-
ried before she finally saw John
coming down the street. As he came
in the door, he handed her the eggs
and milk.
His mother asked, "Is everything
all right? You were gone longer than
I expected."
"Well," replied John, "I saw a boy
whose bike was broken, so I stopped
to help him."
"But you don't know how to fix a
bike," his mother said.
"No," said John, "I sat down
beside him and helped him cry."
Sharing the sorrow and joy of
another is ministry, a ministry in
which God invites each of us to par-
ticipate. This ministry of compan-
ionship has no age requirements,
needs no academic degrees, does not
rely on worldly wealth or status. It
requires one to reach out to another
person in love, God's love.
Richard Gillard in his contempo-
rary hymn The Servant Song, puts it
this way:
We are pilgrims on a journey;
fellow travellers on the road;
we are here to help each other
walk the mile and bear the load.
I will weep when you are weeping,
when you laugh I'll laugh with you,
I will share your joy and sorrow,
till we've seen this journey through.
From the Minister's Study
Ministry is sharing
another's sorrows
