THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 2001. Huron East briefs FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch Many enjoy Friday supper By Jo-Ann McDonald Much has happened in the past two weeks at the Brussels Legion Branch. Friday night supper of sausage and scalloped potatoes was delicious and well attended on a very hot Friday, June 29. Last week turkey casserole was also very good and this week is barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs with salads. On July 1 the fish crew went to Lucknow to celebrate Canada Day and fry fish for the over 200 people who celebrated at the Lucknow Legion. It was a great afternoon although a little cool and breezy. The Brussels Legion crew is avail- able to do fish frys. You can call the Branch for details. Our own fish fry is July 21 from 5 - 7 p.m. Comrade Alf Sutton is in Listowel hospital. O Medic Alert ALWAYS ON CALL www.medicalert.ca For more information 1-800-668-1507 PUC director John Forrester came under fire by McKillop Councillors Sharon McClure and Ferg Kelly. The councillors asked Forrester why there were not any public works employees in the ward. Forrester said the employees are busy working on other projects in other wards. All the work in McKillop was done for now, he said. McClure and Kelly said they want- ed continued visibility of municipal employees, as there were two before- amalgamation and now there don't- seem to be any. "We are just trying to get our slice of the pie," McClure said. *** • Council has reached a contract with the police. The contract will service all areas of Huron East for less than previously expected. *** Kelly and McClure recommended to council that covers be put on all liquid manure tanks. The council is giving recommendations to the coun- ty on nutrient management. McKillop residents have put cov- ers on liquid manure pits for many years, McClure said. Covering manure tanks decreases the odour and the risk of overflow, Kelly said. *** Ethel seasonal resident John Schroeder made a presentation to council on worm pickers. Schroeder, who is a permanent resident in Waterloo, asked council to ban worm picking 1,000 feet from private homes for safety reasons. Wormpickers invade residents' pri- vacy, Schroeder said. Deputy-Mayor Bernie MacLellan said restricting worm picking would hinder an agricultural practice. McClure asked Schroeder who would enforce such a bylaw in the middle of the night. Council will look into the issue. Mischief done to car On July 3 just before 4 p.m. Huron OPP officers were called to McCutcheon Motors on Turnberry Street in Brussels over vehicle dam- age. An employee said that sometime between June 30 and July 2 a per- son entered the car dealership lot and threw an object through the dri- ver's window of a beige 1997 Thunderbird. Any person who can help officers solve this crime is asked to call the Huron OPP or Crime Stoppers at 1 - 800-8477(TIPS). Don't you just love summer days — a little less structure to life, and time to do things not in the usual routine — a visit with Auntie, a spontaneous picnic, a quick trip to the beach, a walk in the garden and time to smell the roses (while picking the bugs and weeds at the same time of course. Life is good. Part of the volunteer duties with St. John Ambulance involve area motocross races and matinee per- formances at the Blyth Festival. Each of these are like a yearly reunion as you see friends from past performances as well as your other lives. So at this week's show I caught up with friends from Oliphant as well as my Uncle and Aunt Jenkins from Bayfield. Good day as well as seeing a good show. If you like a few surprise laughs see The Passion of Narcisse Mondoux. Summer parties, weddings and reunions continue in our community as we renew friendships, relive sto- ries and share new plans. The camp- sites are bustling as families and friends take the easy life of swim- ming and fishing to new heights — a tent, a suit — not a three-piece one — and a pole are all that's needed. So get your work done and enjoy your holiday time doing what you love. Bye now, Betty G. W.
