The Bluewater Kennel Club dog shows, agility and obedience trials are returning to Blyth for the 19th year.
The show first came to Blyth in 1982 and is part of a circuit that starts in Sarnia the previous weekend, then
moves to Woodstock after the Blyth event.
New to the Blyth show this year is the agility competition. Dogs will run through an obstacle course of
tunnels, over jumps, through zig zags and hoops. The
point of the competition is for the dog to go through the
course as fast as possible.
The obedience trials count the "tricks" a dog can
perform. Dogs, are broken in to novice, open and
utility.
In the novice dogs are asked simple tasks of sitting,
staying and coming on command. In the open
competition the commands are more difficult as dogs
must stay while the handler leaves the ring. The utility
is the top of the line for dogs in obedience. In this
competition dogs must sniff out their owner's scent on
toys and perforM several difficult commands.
In the confirmation shows dogs are judged on how they
look and move. The dogs and their handlers parade
around a ring and the judge watches their movements
and then holds them for closer visual examination on
their features. The dogs are shown as breeds, sexes and
ages.
Many- breeds of dogs, from German shepherds to
Japanese shiba inus will be on hand for the
competitions.
