THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27, 2001 Agriculture Former Belgrave resident to chair OIA for term A former Belgrave resident will lead the Ontario Institute of Agrologists (OIA) for the 2001-2002 term. Alan Scott P.Ag. of Stratford was presented with the president's gavel at the 42nd OIA annual meeting and conference which was held in Picton, April 5-7. Scott, the brother of North Huron Deputy-Reeve Murray Scott, grew up on a beef farm near Belgrave. He obtained his BSA degree at the Ontario Agricultural College (University of Toronto) in 1961, followed by a M.Sc in extension education and agricultural economics in 1977 frcim the University of Guelph. In 1994 after 34 years, Scott retired from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs. He served as the agricultural representative for Simcoe and Perth Counties for 24 of those years. He and his wife Margaret operate a sheep operation of 120 ewes, selling market lambs and replacement ewe lambs. Scott has been active with the OIA as the Western branch councillor and president and provincial membership chair. He has also served in a number of positions at his church in Stratford and with the Canadian Rideau Sheep Association. He is currently a member of the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario. The OIA was founded an 1960. It is an organization for professionals in the agri-food industry. The vision is to be a network for providing advice and service to the agri-food system. There are approximately 900 members in Ontario and another 5,000 in other provincial institutes, all part of the Agricultural Institute of Canada. The OIA's headquarters are located at 1 Stone Rd. W., Guelph. Brussels Livestock report Fed steers, heifers sell $1-$2 lower Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending June 22 were 2,041 head of cattle, 571 lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed steers and heifers sold $1 to $2 lower. The cows sold on a strong steady trade. On Thursday the veal sold steady while the lambs sold on a lower market. On Friday all weights of stockers sold $2 to $5 higher on a strong active trade. There were 521 steers on offer selling from $115 to $120 with sales to $127.75. Lauderlea Farms, Listowel, consigned one limousin steer weighing 1,335 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $127.75. Their overall offering of nine steers averaged 1,421 lbs. selling for an average of $124.78. One limousin steer consigned by Schmidt Brook Farms, Woodstock, weighed 1,400 lbs. selling for $122.50. They had a total consignment of twelve steers averaging 1,491 lbs. selling for an average of $117.71. Russell Kernighan, Goderich, consigned one black steer weighing 1,290 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $119. Eleven steers consigned by Charles Ready, St. Marys, averaged 1,410 lbs. and sold for an average of $118.23 with sales up to $121. Orlan Martin, Mount-Forest, consigned two steers averaging 1,512 lbs. selling for an average of $116.86 with sales up to $118.75. Four limousin steers consigned by Roy Ready, St. Marys, averaged 1,383 lbs. selling for an average of $116.33 with his top limousin steer weighing 1,400 lbs. selling to _Dominion Meats for $120. Ervin B. Martin, Mount Forest, consigned thirteen steers averaging 1,340 lbs. selling for an average of $115.87 with his top two charolais steers averaging 1,313 lbs. selling to Holly . Park Meat Packers for $119.75. Fourteen steers consigned by Lloyd Frey, Harriston, averaged 1,298 lbs. and sold for an average of $115.37 with sales up to $118.75. Cunningham Farms, Lucan, consigned twenty-six steers averaging 1,401 lbs. selling for an average of $115.25 with their top limousin steer weighing 1,465 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $121. Eighty-two steers consigned by D. M. McAlpine Farms Inc., Ailsa Craig, averaged 1,451 lbs. selling for an average of $114.75 with a top price of $118.75. There were 288 heifers on offer selling from $115 to $120 with sales to $125. One gold heifer consigned by Sellers Farms, Bluevale, weighed 1,255 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $125. Their overall consignment of eight heifers averaged 1,299 lbs. and sold for an average of $119.69. Karl Terpstra, Mitchell, consigned one limousin heifer weighing 1,175 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $125. His overall consignment of six heifers averaged 1,184 lbs. and sold for an average of $115.49. One limousin heifer consigned by Pete Dewys, Varna, weighed 1,355 lbs. and sold to Moyer Packing Company for $119.75. Don Hoggart, Londesboro, consigned two black heifers averaging 1,203 lbs. selling for an average of $118.21 with sales to $120.50. One red heifer consigned by Bruce Dale, Centralia, weighed 1,310 lbs. and sold for $118.75 with his overall offering of six heifers averaging 1,288 lbs. selling for an average of $116.25. Muxlea Farms, Woodstock, consigned one limousin heifer weighing 1,060 lbs. selling to Dominion Meats for $124.50. Their overall offering of fourteen heifers averaged 1,227 lbs. and sold for an average of $115.29. Six heifers consigned by Darren Johnston, Bluevale, averaged 1,224 lbs. selling for an average of $115.13 with a top price of $118. Perry Sereda, Centralia, consigned one gold heifer weighing 1,310 lbs. selling to Norwich Packers for $124.75. His overall offering of one hundred heifers averaged 1,159 lbs. and sold for an average of $114.94. Twenty heifers consigned by Bill Kerslake, Staffa, averaged 1,138 lbs. and sold for an average of $110.38 with his top limousin heifer weighing 1,140 lbs. selling for $118.50. Keith Jacklin, Bluevale, consigned four heifers averaging 1,135 lbs. selling for an average of $109.88 with his top limousin heifer weighing 1,305 lbs.selling to Moyer Packing Company for $117.75. There were 192 cows on offer. D1 and D2 cows sold $70 to $75 with sales to $93; D3, $65 to $70; D4, $55 to $65. Ron McClure, Walton, consigned one charolais cow weighing 1,295 lbs. selling to Packerland Packing Company Inc. for $93. His overall consignment of three cows averaging 1.403 Ihs. selling for an average of $91.38. One limousin cow consigned by Carmen Brears, Walkerton, weighed_ 1,595 lbs. and sold to Levinoff Meat Products Ltd.- for $92.50. John Tirritnermans, Stratford, consigned one holstein cow weighing 1,285 lbs. selling to Packerland Packing Company Inc. for $92.50. There were 11 bulls on offer selling from $75 to $94.50 with sales to $96.50. Emery Weaver, Desboro, consigned one charolais bull weighing 1,830 lbs. selling to Levinoff Meat Products Ltd. for $96.50. One blue bull consigned by John Simoes, Holyrood, weighing 2,130 lbs. and sold for $91.50. There were 217 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $105 to $149; Holstein, $90 to $105; Plain Holstein, $70 to $85. One black veal steer consigned by Don Eadie, Wingham, weighed 690 lbs. and sold to Holly Park Meat Packers for $149. Eric Nonkes, Auburn, consigned one blue veal heifer weighing 650 lbs. selling to Holly Park Meat Packers for $139. One black veal steer consigned by Arnold Lamb, Goderich, weighed 625 lbs. and sold to Norval Meat Packers for $124. Lambs, under 50 lbs. sold $130 to $137; 50 - 64 lbs., $117 to $151; 65 - 79 lbs., $110 to $130; 80 - 94 lbs., $102 to $115; 95 - 109 lbs., $94 to $103. Goats sold $25 to $93. Sheep sold $35 to $56.
