Brussels steers down $2-$3 dollars, goats stay same
Local dairy farmers have ranked as
some of the best in Huron County
and the province.
In the recently released Dairy
Progress Report farmers were
marked on BCA averages and
management.
Ernst Gubelmann near Walton had
the third best producing Brown
Swiss diary farm in Ontario. His
Breed Class Average (BCA) was
247.7 over • 30 milking cows.
Gubelmann's BCA average was the
second best in Huron Country and in
the Ontario top 50.
Lyle Martin of Sun Holm
Holsteins near Ethel had the third
best Huron County BCA average at
249.
Management was graded on the
annual milk value, udder health, age
of first calving, calving intervals,
longevity and percentage in milk.
Gerry Rijkhoff of Gerthea near
Walton had the best managed herd in
Huron County and was in the top 20
of Ontario herds with a score of sixth
best BCA average in Huron at 230.7.

Jerseys near Auburn had the second
best managed herd in Huron scoring
935 and made the Huron milk
producers. top 25 BCA average at
223.3.
Other top BCA average producers
in Huron were Viktor Haag of
Breezy Braes near Brussels at 234.3
with the fifth best average while
Adrie Bos of Bellestein near Blyth
had the 10th best average at 225.3.
Tony and Anita Vanhittersum had
the third best managed Huron herd
with 920 points.
Other local producers with top 25
BCA averages in Huron County
were Tony and Jocolus Verburg near
Auburn at 220.7.
The provincial BCA average was
I 98.7.
Total - receipts for ' Brussels
Livestock for the week ending June
15 were 2,286 head of cattle, 563
lambs and goats.
On Tuesday fed steers and heifers
sold $2 to $3 lower. The cows sold
on a steady market. On Thursday the
veal sold on a steady active trade
while the lambs sold fully steady to
last week's prices. On Friday all
weights of stockers sold on a steady
trade....
There were 571 steers on offer
selling from $116 to $122 with sales
to $135. Schmidt Brook Farms,
Woodstock, consigned one gold steer
weighing 1,510 lbs. selling to
Norwich Packers for $135. Their
overall offering of twelve steers
averaged 1,467 lbs. and sold for an
average of $120.20. Robert Elg,
Listowel, consigned one red steer
weighing 1,275 lbs. sellinglo Norval
Meat Packers for $129.25. One
limousin steer consigned by Joel
Martin, Paisley, weighed 1,305 lbs.
and sold for $125.75.
Jason B. Martin, Chesley,
consigned ten steers averaging 1,362
lbs. selling for an average of $122.09
with his top limousin steer weighing
1,455 lbs. selling to Norwich
Packers for $127.75. One red steer
consigned by Don Shiell, Wingham,
weighed 1,325 lbs. and sold to Holly
Park Meat Packers for $128. His
overall - offering of five steers
averaged 1,378 lbs. selling for an
average of $121.42

Their overall offering of thirty-eight
steers averaged 1,392 lbs. selling for
an average of $119.14.

sale of one black steer weighing

$126.25. Their overall offering of
thirty steers averaged 1,262 lbs. for
an average price of $118.15.
There were 466 heifers on offer
selling from $116 to $122 with sales
to $136. Paul Popp. Londesboro,
consigned one red heifer weighing
1,310 lbs. selling to Norval Meat
Packers for $136. One hundred and
seventy-three heifers consigned by
Brenda Calhoun, Chesley, averaged
1,170 lbs. selling for an average of
$118.04 with their top three red
heifers averaging 1,083 lbs. selling
for $132.25.
Two heifers consigned by Daniel
Frey, Mount Forest, averaged 1,168
lbs. and sold for an average of
$122.73 with sales up to $123.50.
